Volume 23 · Letter 46

By the grace of Hashem,

27 Kislev* 5724,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

After a long interruption, I have received, with pleasure, your letter and what was enclosed therein, a memorandum (note 1: Emanating from the ministry of religious affairs, concerning the world calendar. This memorandum explained that the latter was to replace the Gregorian calendar and include within it days that are not part of the weekly cycle) dated the 19th of Kislev*. Although you do not specify it, I have good hope that you know the history of this day of good tidings, that of the liberation of the Admur HaZaken*, author of the Tanya* and of the Shulchan Aruch*, which is also that of our deliverance and the freedom of our souls. And perhaps you personally participated in one of the Chassidic* gatherings that take place, every year, on this day. Several of them are held in the holy city of Yerushalayim*, may it be restored and rebuilt. May Hashem cause that this day influence your entire year, so that you disseminate traditional Judaism, our holy Torah*, Torah* of truth, in particular the light of Chassidus* and what concerns it.

Of course, I read this memorandum with interest. It seems that the question of the calendar is once again on the agenda, in the international context, and may Hashem cause that ultimately, our brothers, the children of Yisrael*, not lend assistance to the detractors of Judaism, especially in light of the history of Yisrael* and in accordance with the allusions found in the Midrashim* of our Sages*. Without their assistance, these detractors could not impose their authority, not even in material domains, and even less regarding the spirituality of the people of Yisrael*. According to the well-known formulation, without the intervention of those who "emanate from you," all destruction would be inconceivable.

In fact, these days of Chanukah* deliver the same teaching (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 8723). Indeed, the Hellenists claimed, at that time, the dominant culture. They claimed that Yisrael* is identical to all other peoples and must imitate their behavior. Certainly, some of their practices, the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, are specifically Jewish. It is appropriate, nevertheless, to study the Torah* solely to acquire knowledge, to have a purely intellectual perception of it. And, consequently, the sacrifice that one offers can just as well be a pig, which will be introduced into the Temple and led to the altar. As for the light of the Mitzvah*, one may defile the oils, but not (note 3: The Rebbe* underlines the word: "not") make them disappear, for the lighting of the Menorah* remains a necessity, but must, however, be accomplished with impure oil! Because of our numerous faults and to our great misfortune, the same danger still threatens our era of multiple trials, which counts numerous Hellenists, of all sorts and kinds. It is difficult to say more, so painful and even distressing is this.

On this subject, but you surely know it, the episode of the 19th of Kislev* itself occurred solely because Jews lent their assistance (note 4: To the denunciation of which the Admur HaZaken* was the object), as is established. Despite this, the one whose deliverance we celebrate, the Admur HaZaken*, warns, in a well-known letter (note 5: Appearing in the Tanya*, Iggeres HaKodesh*, at chapter 12). Making reference to his liberation and his deliverance, he invokes, in his own words, "the multiple kindnesses that Hashem accomplished for us," but he demands, despite this: "that one not be proud, in one's heart, in relation to one's brothers, for perhaps, in this way, Hashem will inspire them, as the face is reflected in water..." Such is the conception of Chabad*, which consists in bringing such persons closer to the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, rather than lowering oneself toward them, which Hashem forbid, being motivated by one's love of one's fellow which is one with the love of Hashem and with the love of His Torah* (note 6: See, on this subject, letter no. 8701). With my respects and my blessing for a joyous Chanukah*,
