To the great Rabbi, Torah scholar, man of truth, Hashem-fearing, communal worker, Rabbi Elimelech,[1] may he live,

Peace and blessing!

It was pleasant for me to hear from Mrs... about the warm attitude that he has shown her throughout all the time [of her difficulties], and particularly now that she finds herself in perplexity and is facing a change in her situation — returning to the Holy Land — and is in special need of encouragement and assistance.

And although "the reward of a mitzvah is the mitzvah"[2] and there is no need for thanks from flesh and blood, nevertheless I wish to express my satisfaction at seeing the attribute of ahavas Yisrael* expressed in actual deed — "the deed is the main thing" — for the greatness of this matter is particularly emphasized in the teachings of chassidus in general, and Chabad in particular, by the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya and the Shulchan Aruch, whose 150th yahrzeit is this year.

And may it be the Will that in his students and those influenced by him as well, this attribute of ahavas Yisrael shall be recognizable in actual deeds — to influence in their environment [the strengthening] of traditional Yiddishkeit, which is the inner expression of ahavas Yisrael: through an action that brings the one influenced to the life of the World to Come and [the life of] this world, in addition to ahavas Yisrael [expressed through] material benefit in the plain sense.

נעם לי לשמוע ממרת... על דבר היחס הלבבי שהראה לה במשך כל הזמן, ובפרט עכשו שנמצאת במבוכה ועומדת בפני שנוי במצבה לשוב לאה"ק ת"ו ונצרכת לעידוד ולעזר במיוחד.

ואף ששכר מצוה מצוה ואין צורך בתודה של בשר ודם, אבל רצוני להביע קורת רוחי בראותי מידת אהבת ישראל מתבטאת בפועל, במעשה הוא עיקר, שבמיוחד הודגש גודל ענין זה בתורת החסידות בכלל, ובחב"ד בפרט, על ידי רבנו הזקן בעל התניא והשלחן ערוך, אשר השנה היא שנת הק"ן להסתלקותו.

ויהי רצון שגם בתלמידיו ומושפעיו של כת"ר תהי' ניכרת מידה זו דאהבת ישראל במעשים בפועל, להשפיע בסביבתם בהחזקת היהדות המסורתית, שזהו הביטוי הפנימי של אהבת ישראל על ידי פעולה המביאה את המושפע לחיי עולם הבא ועולם הזה, נוסף על אהבת ישראל בטובה גשמית כפשוטה.
