Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8678 — Grief & Loss

(Elul* 5723)

I respond to your letter of the 2nd of Elul* (note 1: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 19, at page 499), in which you describe to me in what manner you are beginning to earn your living independently, your first steps, and what you have accomplished. May Hashem cause that this beginning be at a good and fruitful moment. Our Sages* say (note 2: See the Mechilta* and the commentary of Rashi* on the verse Yisro* 19, 5) that beginnings are difficult and may Hashem therefore cause that this period pass as quickly as possible, that spiritual largesse begin, and material largesse as well. For a Jew, indeed, these two dimensions are linked. In this way, in the tranquility of body and mind, you and your wife will educate all your children to Torah*, to the wedding canopy, and to good deeds.

Moreover, we are already in the month of Elul* and the Admur HaZaken*, this year being the one hundred and fiftieth since his passing Hilula*, cites, in this regard, the example of a King Whom one welcomes in the field. There, He receives each one with benevolence and He shows a smiling face to all, as the Likkutei Torah* explains, Parshas Reeh*, at page 32b. With my blessing to give me good news and to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

[אלול תשכ"ג]

במענה למכתבו מב' אלול, בו כותב על התחלתו לעצמו בענין של פרנסה, והצעדים הראשונים ומה שעשה בזה.

ויהי רצון שתהי' ההתחלה בשעה טובה ומוצלחת, ותקופת ההתחלה אשר עלי' אמרו שקשה היא, תעבור בהקדם, ותתחיל ההרחבה ברוחניות וגם בגשמיות, אשר אצל איש הישראלי יחד יהלכון.

ומתוך מנוחת הנפש והגוף יגדלו הוא וזוגתו תחי' את כל ילידיהם שיחיו לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים,

ובפרט אשר נכנסנו בחדש אלול, עליו אומר רבנו הזקן, - אשר השנה שנת המאה וחמשים להסתלקות הילולא שלו - שהוא ע"ד משל למלך שמקבלים פניו בשדה וכו', והוא מקבל את כולם בספ"י ומראה פנים שוחקות לכולם (לקוטי תורה פ' ראה ל"ב ב').
