Volume 22 · Letter 460

By the grace of Hashem,

28 Elul* 5723,

I bless you and greet you.

I respond to your letter (note 1: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 10, at page 181, and the Emunah U'Mada, at page 104), in which you refer to the two conceptions relating to the revolutions of the earth and the sun, with the theories of the scientists on this subject. I am, however, surprised by what you write to me. Indeed, you surely know that a fundamental principle of Chassidus*, which is the following, has been adopted by all (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "all," "impossible," "current," "rejects," "science," "not in a position," "contradict," and "totally") scientists in recent decades:

If one observes, in a system constituted of two elements in motion, the relative position of one with respect to the other, it is impossible to establish which one is immobile and which one moves, not because of the insufficiency of our current knowledge, but indeed by the very "nature" of things. This means that, in this matter, science has not adopted a definitive position. On the contrary, it rejects the possibility of providing a definitive answer to this question. Moreover, if one questions one conception, one can do so equally regarding the opposite conception, as the theory of relativity explains at length.

This means that when someone claims, for any reason whatsoever, to be able to establish that a given element is immobile while another one revolves around the first, science is not in a position to contradict him.

In fact, even before this hypothesis was formulated (note 3: See, on this subject, letters no. 5449 and 6877), it was impossible to totally reject the conception of Ptolemy according to which the earth is always immobile and the sun revolves around it. At most, one could advance that this hypothesis seems more problematic than that of Copernicus. Nevertheless, the latter also raises some objections and difficulties, but all this will not be developed here.

Of course, my time does not allow me to devote myself to writing letters. But, it is clear that education and study based on sacred values take precedence (note 4: This justifies the sending of this letter to a teacher).
