To the young man Ezra Binyamin (note 1: E. B. Shochat, of Toronto. See, regarding him, letter no. 8619),

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Elul*, in which you envision different possibilities for the continuation of your studies during the coming period. You ask me what I think. In my view, it would be good to study in one of the Yeshivos* of the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, very soon and in our days, by our righteous Moshiach*. You will decide which one when you are on the spot, after having visited them. You will also seek the counsel of your friends who are on the spot, for "salvation comes from numerous counselors."

In general, the present period prepares the year that comes. All the more so is this the case when one has, for this year, a plan to settle in the Holy Land, Royal Palace of the Supreme King, the Holy One, blessed be He. Nevertheless, when the demand upon a man is increased, one also grants him additional means to accede to this request with even greater strength.

The preparation for all this is defined by different texts. In any case, one must be animated by a strong trust in Hashem, Who grants His Providence to each one, and the Baal Shem Tov* defines this notion with precision. Moreover, one must do so with the joy of the Mitzvah*, as the Rambam* specifies at the end of his Laws of Lulav*, and with enthusiasm. What is more, one can verify in practice that the success of this preparation is increased correspondingly, this is quite evident. Furthermore, you surely keep the three well-known studies that bear on the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. This is in addition to your study, with impetus and ardor, of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*.

May Hashem cause that you give me good news of all this, all the more so since we have entered the month of Elul* and, as the Admur HaZaken* explains, this being the one hundred and fiftieth year since his passing Hilula*, one can cite, on this subject, the parable of a King Who goes out to the field, welcomes each one there with benevolence, and shows a smiling face to all, as the Likkutei Torah* explains, Parshas Devarim*, at page 32b (note 2: See the end of the preceding letter). With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

במענה למכתבו מר"ח אלול, בו כותב סברות שונות בנוגע להמשך לימודו בעת הקרובה ושואל דעתי בזה.

לפי הנראה לי - מהנכון אשר ילמוד באחת הישיבות אשר באה"ק ת"ו ב"ב ע"י משיח צדקנו, ובאיזו ישיבה - יקבע לאחרי שיהי' שם ויבקר בהישיבות ויתייעץ עם ידידיו אשר במקום שם, ותשועה ברוב יועץ.

ואם בכלל ימים אלו ימי הכנה הם לשנה הבע"ל, עאכו"כ כאשר בתכנית השנה הוא גם עלי' לארץ הקדושה, פלטרין של ממה"מ הקב"ה, אלא שבודאי - עם ההוספה בהדרישה מהאדם, ניתנו לו גם כחות נוספים למלאות הדרישה חדשה ועוד ביתר שאת ויתר עז.

ואופן ההכנה הרי מבואר הוא בכ"מ, ובכ"א צ"ל מתוך בטחון חזק בהשי"ת המשגיח על כאו"א בהשגחה פרטית [וכמבואר בארוכה בתורת הבעש"ט ענין השגחה פרטית זו], ומתוך שמחה (של מצוה, עיין רמב"ם סוף הלכות לולב) וטוב לבב.

ובפרט אשר רואים במוחש, שעי"ז מתוסף בהצלחת ההכנה, וק"ל.

בטח שומר על שלשת השיעורים דחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, נוסף על לימודו בהתמדה ושקידה נגלה וחסידות.

ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בכל האמור, ובפרט שנכנסנו בחדש אלול שע"פ דברי רבנו הזקן - אשר השנה שנת המאה וחמשים להסתלקות הילולא שלו - הוא ע"פ משל למלך בשדה, שמקבל את כ"א בספ"י ומראה פנים שוחקות לכולם וכו' (לקוטי תורה, דברים ל"ב ב').
