Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8662 — Faith & Bitachon
By the grace of Hashem,
1st Elul* 5723,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself
to communal needs, the Rav Shlomo (note 1: Rav S. Mendelssohn. See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 12, at page 206),
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your letter of this Sunday. I thank you very much for your good news, regarding the actions that have been carried out to strengthen Judaism and disseminate it, in Minneapolis and the region, within the framework of a branch of the Merkaz LeInyonei Chinuch*, which is directed by your brother-in-law, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, filled with eagerness, the Rav Moshe (note 2: Rav M. Feller. See, on this subject, letter no. 8300). Of course, I was satisfied to read, at the conclusion of your words, that your wife brought her help as well, that she made efforts and that she knew success.
Moreover, in the domain of education, the means are granted to the daughters of Yisrael*, each being a descendant of Sarah*, of Rivkah*, of Rachel*, and of Leah*, to act far beyond what men do, as concrete practice establishes.
May Hashem therefore cause that this success awaken in you new strengths to continue the action, subsequently, in the same direction, not limiting oneself to those who are already within the four cubits of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, but striving to separate the good grain from the chaff, as our Sages* underline its importance, in tractate Bava Metzia* 85a.
Time does not at all permit me a lengthy analysis of the second part of your letter, all the more so since my position is well known in this matter. It is expressed in different texts and even printed. However, as a sign of gratitude for the satisfaction you gave me through the first part of your letter, I will not content myself with a simple remark, but I will introduce some elements on this subject.
Regarding the wearing of the beard (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 8297), it is clear, according to all (note 4: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "all," "important practice," and "all") opinions, that it is an important practice (note 4). The controversy therefore bears solely on the following point: can one permit cutting it when it is indispensable or seems to be so, and is there, in this, a rabbinical prohibition or one of the Torah*? On the other hand, it is quite clear, as I have said, according to the revealed part of the Torah* and even more according to its hidden teaching, that "the elements of rectification of the beard," to use the expression of the Zohar* and the works of Kabbalah*, considered as an integral part of the Oral Law by all (note 4) Jews, possess a particularly great holiness. Now, "the Holy One, blessed be He, acts measure for measure" (note 5: In the manner, the "measure," in which one acts toward Him, according to the Pesikta Zuta* on the verse Shemos* 3:6) and the measure of Hashem corresponds to these elements of rectification in man below, which allow him the heavenly revelation. There is here an incontestable fact, admitted by all, to the point that the beard is called: "the image of Hashem."
According to the Tzemach Tzedek* and several earlier and later Decisors, it is a prohibition clearly pronounced by the Torah*, as he explains in his responsa and, in a more precise manner, in his halachic* decisions. You will also consult the Darkei Teshuvah* on the Yoreh Deah* and the responsa Minchas Elazar*, volume 2, chapter 48. A compilation and a lengthy analysis of the different opinions expressed in this matter, according to both the revealed part of the Torah* and its profound dimension, is found in the Amudei Arazim* of Rav Margolis, published in the holy city of Yerushalayim*, may it be restored and rebuilt. This work reproduces wondrous and also frightening words about the wearing of the beard and about cutting it. It also reproduces a letter from the Gaon* of Rogatchov, Rav Y. Rosen, according to whom it is an absolute prohibition.
I take up, in order, the reasons justifying your negative attitude:
A) You fear that wearing the beard will give you the feeling that you can exempt yourself from other practices of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*. It is clear that this argument is not admissible, otherwise there would be no limit. One would therefore have to suppress every manner of better accomplishing the Mitzvah*, all the more the pursuit of the best manner, and perhaps even the dispositions of the Sages*. Now, on the contrary, our Sages* inform us and give us the assurance that one Mitzvah* draws another. Every addition, even if it bears only on a better manner of accomplishing the Law, will ultimately strengthen the Mitzvah* itself, this is quite evident.
But perhaps you mean that wearing the beard is ostentatious. Thank Hashem, this is in no way the case lately. Moreover, different practices, for example the wearing of the Tzitzis* on the outside (note 6: See, on this subject, the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 33, from page 95), have spread also in Lithuanian Yeshivos*. Now, it is evident, including for those who permit hiding the Tzitzis*, that this is in no way comparable to wearing them in evidence.
B) You tell me that one who delves into the Halachah* has the means to struggle against the surrounding world, as has been the case until now. I am very surprised that you write this to me. Indeed, close to the giving of the Torah*, there occurred that which went against: "I am Hashem your Elokim*" (note 7: The sin of the golden calf). Now, some of the persons involved had personally observed the Heavenly Chariot and they had not merely learned about it, as the Midrash* says. Then, the first golden calf led to what happened during the construction of the first Temple, by men whose immense knowledge of the Torah* was underlined, to the point of rendering every scholar inconsistent before them, as tractate Sanhedrin* 102a specifies. Likewise, in the era of the second Temple, there were Tzadok and Baitus. And, it is the same in our days, including in this city, whose leaders belong to different organizations that oppose traditional Judaism. Now, these persons studied beforehand and they acquired a profound knowledge of the Halachah*.
C) You envisage that the decision to wear the beard might not be inspired by a feeling of holiness, but by the pursuit of self-interest. Nevertheless, the Halachah* rules (note 8: See the Laws of the Study of the Torah* of the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 4, paragraph 3) that: "a man will put into practice the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, if need be in an interested manner, for it is thus that eventually he will do so in a disinterested manner."
D) You make reference, in addition, to such a person. Now, I know several members of her family and I therefore have good hope that ultimately, not only will there be no opposition on her part, but, on the contrary, she will come to your aid. Moreover, your value will be increased in her eyes and, in the future, she will accord more credence to your words concerning the fear of Hashem, the Torah*, and the Mitzvos*. Indeed, one can think that at present, when you formulate a demand in this matter, she says to herself, to use a formulation of our Sages* (note 9: In tractate Berachos* 28b), that one who is moist to the point of moistening others must himself greatly surpass, personally, the degree of moisture that he intends to confer upon others.
Of course, I am not unaware that in different countries, including this one, those who truly feared Hashem permitted such a practice, basing themselves on different explanations. Consequently, in the following generation, those who feared Hashem put this permission into practice. But, no doubt you are not unaware of the change that has occurred in the meantime. At the time, in certain countries and at different moments, those who granted these permissions thought it was the only means of saving Jews who were about to go to the other extreme. They therefore made much effort to formulate such a permission and you must understand what I mean. In fact, the same approach exists for clear and important prohibitions of the Torah*, including in the Written Law. This is the case, for example, of the captive woman of war, whom the Torah* clearly permits. Now, our Sages* give the reason for this (note 10: And underline that, if such a permission had not been given, men would not have hesitated to transgress the prohibition of the Torah*) and it is indeed said: "Do not judge your fellow" (note 11: Until you are in his place)! And, perhaps, in those countries, at those times, who knows?
But, as I have said, it is in no way the same in our era, thank Hashem. Whoever sincerely desires it has the means to disseminate Judaism, without compromise, in every place where his influence extends. May Hashem cause that one make full use of these means and it is the same for what is the subject of our discussion.
I conversed with someone who visited me and who developed the same arguments. This man wanted to show me his great sagacity and his immense knowledge, allowing him to establish this permission. After having asked him, first of all, to respond to me directly, without ulterior motive, I posed the following question to him: why, when they draw Moshe* our master or Aharon* the Kohen*, do Jews and non-Jews represent them with a long beard? Regarding Aharon*, one can base oneself on a verse of Tehillim* (note 12: 133:2), "the beard of Aharon* that descends upon his garments." On the other hand, why does one draw Moshe* our master in this way? Is it not he who received the Torah* on Mount Sinai*? And, is it not said (note 13: See, in particular, tractate Megillah* 19b, the Yerushalmi*, tractate Peah*, chapter 1, paragraph 4, and Midrash* Shemos Rabbah*, at the beginning of chapter 47) that what scholars reveal in each generation was already transmitted to Moshe* on Mount Sinai* and that "the force of the permission is greater" (note 14: See tractate Berachos* 60b)?
Being an upright man, he responded to me that he himself, representing in his mind not only Moshe* our master but also someone who observed the Torah* and the Mitzvos* in a later generation, held it as evident that he had a long beard descending upon his garments, that he absolutely did not cut.
I will conclude with what is current, since the month of Elul* begins. The books of Kabbalah*, cited by the Likkutei Torah* of the Admur HaZaken*, this year being the one hundred and fiftieth since his passing Hilula*, Parshas Devarim*, at page 32b, explain that the thirteen Attributes of divine mercy, the "Elements of heavenly rectification," illuminate at this time. May Hashem therefore cause that you not ruin the receptacle allowing one to receive them, the thirteen elements of rectification of the beard of men below. With my blessing to give good news, as well as to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
M. Schneerson,
