To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to
communal needs, the Rav Pinchas Aharon (note 1: Rav P. A. Weberman, of Miami. See, regarding him, letter no. 8291),
I greet you and bless you,
You write to me about the telephone (note 2: The addressee of this letter wrote: "The Likkutei Sichos*, volume 2, at page 506, relates that the Rebbe Rayatz*, on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals, raised, with a piece of wood, the telephone in the room of his father, the Rebbe Rashab*, so that the prayers could be heard in the other room. Perhaps it is possible to deduce from this a permission to use a microphone or a tape recorder, if the one speaking does not do so directly facing this machine"). Nevertheless, this is in no way comparable to a microphone, for the following reasons:
A) The one who speaks is not at all aware of it (note 3: He does not know that his words are heard through the telephone).
B) He is not satisfied that one hears him in the adjacent room and, moreover, it even goes against his will.
C) It is in no way (note 4: The Rebbe* underlines the word: "in no way") a "severed head" (note 5: From the expression, "can one cut the head without death ensuing?" designating an act that has as its effect an ineluctable transgression of Shabbos*, even though it was not performed with this intention).
There are yet other reasons, but all this is quite evident. With my blessing,

... בענין הטליפון שכותבו - אינו דומה כלל לענין המיקרופון: א) המדבר אינו יודע כלל עד"ז. ב) לא ניחא לי' (ואדרבא היפך רצונו) שישמעו בחדר אחר. ג) אינו פסיק רישא כלל , כיון שרק הדבור בקול רם ובסמיכות מקום להטלפון - פועל הטליפון. ועוד. וק"ל.

בענין הטליפון: במכתבו: בלקו"ש ח"ב ע' 506 מסופר על כ"ק אדמו"ר מהוריי"צ נ"ע שבערבי שבתות וימים טובים הניח עץ להגביה הטלפון בחדר כ"ק אביו אדמו"ר מהורש"ב נ"ע, בכדי שישמע התפלות מהחדר האחר, אולי נוכל ללמוד היתר על מייקרופון, או "טייפ רעקארדער" אם אותו המדבר אינו מכוון לדבר לתוכו.
