Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8568 — Chinuch
Volume 22 · Letter 351
By the grace of Hashem,
3 Teves* 5723,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the attention of Mr. Shlomo Tal,
Yerushalayim*, may it be restored and rebuilt,
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter of the 27th of Kislev*, as well as that which preceded it, with what was enclosed. Of course, I share your opinion on the importance of devoting oneself to education based on sacred values. If this has always been so, how much more is this the case in our day, when two fundamental specificities have been added. On the one hand, it is necessary to fill the gaping hole that was left by the persecutions and the extermination of a third of our people, the children of Israel (note 1: During the Second World War). On the other hand, one must take advantage of the moral awakening, in general, of that of the young, in particular. All seek the truth and desire it, although some of them do not yet know what they seek, while others have well understood the interest of a return to the sources.
Great is he who acts and who causes others to act, in particular in the domain of education. For, every positive evolution, on the part of the young, will influence their entire existence. On this subject, I enclose a copy of the talk (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 8557) underscoring the obligation to hear the voice of a child who cries. To return to the content of your letter, it is clear that, when our delegates will visit the countries you mention, they will endeavor to meet the persons you cite. Indeed, they are accustomed to meeting with the local leaders, although, until now, these places do not appear on the list of those that are visited, due to their distance or for other reasons.
We have lived the days of Chanukah* and, on this subject, I express my blessing and my hope to each one, within all of Israel, that one act and that one strengthen: "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light," without compromise, rejecting all foreign contact, which is also a teaching of the days of Chanukah*. Indeed, when one came to kindle the Menorah*, one found olive oil, but it had been touched by a foreign hand and it was therefore impure for the Jews. You will understand what I mean and, due to our many transgressions, all of this is current. With my respects and my blessing to give me good news of it,
