Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8565 — Chinuch
Volume 22 · Letter 348 · To: jeune homme
By the grace of Hashem,
Chanukah* 5723,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the young man, who devotes himself to communal needs,
Mr. Avraham (note 1: A. Tauber. See, regarding him, letter no. 8247),
I greet you and bless you,
I learned, with pleasure, that you met with the organization of working youth, not only its counselors, but also its members, boys and girls. I also became aware of your actions to bring them closer to traditional Judaism. And, one knows the positive relationship of our holy Torah*, which is called Torah* of life, for it delivers a teaching for a daily life worthy of the name, toward work, in general and the worker, in particular. Our Sages underlined its importance and they relate it regarding the first Jew, of whom it is said: "Avraham* was unique." When he went to different lands and saw their inhabitants eating and drinking, in insouciance, he said: "May Hashem grant that I have no portion in this land." Then, he arrived in Eretz Yisrael* and he saw its men occupied in weeding, when it was the time to do so, in hoeing when the moment came. He then said: "May my portion be in this land!" and the Holy One, blessed be He, answered him: "It is to your descendants that I will give this land," as the Midrash* Bereishis Rabbah*, chapter 39, at paragraph 8, relates.
How much more is this the case for Eretz Yisrael*, the Holy Land. As our Sages explain, commenting on the verse: "When you will arrive in the land, you will plant," one must, first of all, work and plant and, in this way, one identifies oneself with the Holy One, blessed be He, Who was the first to plant. At the beginning of creation, indeed, Hashem devoted Himself only to planting, as it is written: "And, Hashem Elokim* planted a garden in Eden*" and: "You yourselves, when you will enter the land, will devote yourselves, at first, only to planting," according to the terms of the Midrash* Vayikra Rabbah*, Parshas Kedoshim*, chapter 25, at paragraph 3. All of this is perfectly precise, for a planting has for its purpose to produce fruits. The value of work resides precisely in the fact of giving fruits, fruits bearing fruits.
Such is, in general, the meaning of the Precept: "In all your ways, know Him" (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "In all your ways, know Him"). A Jew must sanctify all that concerns him, including his work and especially in the Holy Land. If this is so for each man and each woman, how much more does this duty rest upon the working youth, who possess an increased enthusiasm and embark upon the path of life.
May Hashem cause you and your friends to act, in this matter, in conformity with the teaching of the days of Chanukah* (note 3: Whose lights are kindled in increasing order, from day to day), advancing, adding and illuminating. Warmly greeting all these people, I address to you my blessing of success and to give me good news,
