Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8562 — Prayer
Volume 22 · Letter 345
By the grace of Hashem,
26 Kislev* 5723,
Brooklyn,
To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself
to communal needs, the Rav M. Z. HaLevi (note 1: Rav Menachem Zeev Gringlass, of Montreal. See, regarding him, letter no. 8368),
I greet you and bless you,
I thank you very much for having indicated to me this reference, in the notes of the Yaavetz* (note 2: Rav Gringlass wrote: "Rav Yaakov Silberman, who writes Mezuzos*, showed me what he has just found in the notes and commentaries on tractate Gittin*, appearing in the large editions of the Talmud*, according to the version of Vilna of the erudite, Rav Yaakov Emden, at page 60a. He indicates that Rabbi Yochanan* and Reish Lakish* consulted a work of the Midrash*. He says: It seems to me that they did not consult the Etz Chaim* and the Wisdom of Truth, that is to say what we call the Kabbalah*, during the days of the week. They studied only the laws and the principles, for the purpose of determining the conduct that one must have in Israel. On Shabbos*, on the other hand, they did not devote themselves to these laws and these rules, due to their severity. Thus, it is said that a priori, one does not study them during Shabbos*, due to their value. It is therefore the Midrash* that they studied, for it motivates the heart, due to the pleasure of Shabbos*. And, the holiness of the day comes to one's aid in order to perceive and to understand the hidden Wisdom. This is the Holy of Holies and the Sages say: If you wish to know He Who created the world by His Word, study the Midrash*. It is not a matter here of the narratives that are ordinarily called Aggadah*. And, this supports the affirmation of the Kuntres Etz Chaim*, which says that the holy Shabbos* is devoted to the study of the profound part of the Torah*"). You will consult the Pri Etz Chaim*, gate of Shabbos*, at the end of chapter 21 and the Siddur* of the Arizal*, before the prayer of Minchah* of Shabbos*, which cites "the custom of the first generations" (note 3: The Rebbe* underlines the expression: "first generations"). The Taamei HaMitzvos*, at the Parshas Va'eschanan*, says that the Arizal* envisaged the Halachah* in six different manners, corresponding to the six days of the week and in a seventh, based on the esoteric dimension of the Torah*, which corresponds to Shabbos*.
