Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8559 — Tzedakah
Volume 22 · Letter 342 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
By the grace of Hashem,
15 Kislev* 5723,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
the Rav David Nathan (note 1: Rav D. N. Lesser, of Brooklyn. See, regarding him, letter no. 6575),
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received the Chanukah* candles that you have the pleasant custom of sending me each year and I thank you for them. These reached me in proximity to the 19th of Kislev*, Rosh Hashanah* of the study of Chassidus* and of the Chassidic* ways. In fact, the common point between the two events (note 2: Chanukah* and the 19th of Kislev*. See, on this subject, the following letter) is the profound dimension of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed by Chassidus*, presenting the secrets of the Torah*. Indeed, the oil of the Torah* has for its purpose to disseminate the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*) and to illuminate, until illuminating the public domain. Thus, our Sages relate (note 4: In tractate Menachos* 86b and the commentary of Rashi*) that the Temple had diaphanous and sealed windows. It resulted from this that the Chanukah* lights are kindled "at the door of one's house, toward the outside."
The same disposition also exists for the profound dimension of the Torah*, its oil. At the beginning, it was reserved for an elite. Then, it was said that: "It is a Mitzvah* to reveal this Wisdom," according to the words of the Arizal* who is still alive, as the holy Tanya* cites (note 5: In Igeres HaKodesh*, at chapter 26), of the Admur HaZaken*, whose joy and deliverance we celebrate, on the 19th of Kislev*. Finally, it became necessary to disseminate the wellsprings to the outside. All of this is quite evident.
May Hashem therefore cause each one to act in three domains (note 6: See, on this subject, letter no. 8561): A) the dissemination, B) the wellsprings themselves, C) until they reach the outside, in joy, vitality and enthusiasm. With my blessing on the occasion of the festival of liberation and for luminous Chanukah* lights,
N. B.: As is my custom, basing myself on the words of the Zohar* (note 7: Volume 2, at page 128a, according to which one must pay in order to put into practice a Mitzvah*), I enclose a check to pay for the Chanukah* candles.
