Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8558 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 22 · Letter 341

By the grace of Hashem,

14 Kislev* 5723,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of all the men and women participating in the

Chassidic* gathering of the 19th of Kislev*, date of the liberation of

the Admur HaZaken*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan

Aruch*, festival during which He liberated our souls in

peace, when the light and the vitality of our soul were

granted to us (note 1: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the terms of the Rebbe Rashab*, which he mentioned in his letter, printed as an introduction to the Kuntres UMa'ayon* and in his Igros Kodesh*, volume 1, letter no. 110"), which will take place in Kfar Chabad*, in our

Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, by

our righteous Moshiach*, may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you abundantly and bless you,

Finding myself far geographically but close in spirit, I take part in your Chassidic* gathering, during which words of Torah* will be pronounced, words of encouragement. And, one will raise one's glass in order to say Lechaim*, for life and for blessing. This year is, indeed, the one hundred and fiftieth since the passing (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "One knows the explanation of the Admur HaZaken*, in the Torah Or*, at the end of the Parshas Vayakhel*, according to which Histalkus* designates both the passing and the revelation of a particularly elevated Light, issued from the highest source. It is for this reason that this term is used regarding the passing of several righteous men. Subsequently, indeed, this righteous man 'is found in this world more than during his lifetime,' as the Admur HaZaken* explains, at chapter 27 of Igeres HaKodesh*") of the Admur HaZaken* (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "One will note that the distribution of the calendar was then the same as that of this year. He departed from this world 'after having said the prayer of Maariv* and the Havdalah* in the blessing: 'He grants discernment,' with a clear and composed mind, as well as an immense fervor, shortly before midnight, around eleven o'clock, at the conclusion of the holy Shabbos* Parshas Shemos*, the 24th of Teves* 5573,' according to the terms of the introduction of the Shulchan Aruch* of the Admur HaZaken*"). My specific participation will take, in this case, the form of an account from the life of the Admur HaZaken*, an account showing the conduct that is fitting to adopt and delivering a teaching.

* * *

The voice of a child who cries (note 4: See, on this subject, the preceding letter)

The Admur HaZaken*, our master, resided in the same house as his son, who was, subsequently, his successor, the Admur HaEmtza'i*. Rabbi Dov Ber (note 5: The Admur HaEmtza'i*) was characterized by an extraordinary power of concentration and depth. When he studied or when he prayed, he was unaware of anything that took place around him.

Once, the Admur HaEmtza'i* was absorbed in his study. There was, in a corner of his room, a cradle and the baby who was in it fell out. He burst into sobs, but the Admur HaEmtza'i* was unaware of anything. His father, the Admur HaZaken*, was then on the upper floor and he was himself absorbed in his study. Despite this, he heard the cries of the child, went down, entered the room of his son, lifted the baby, tended to him, calmed him, put him back in his cradle and did not leave the room until his grandson was calmed. But, Rabbi Dov Ber was unaware of what his father had done, nor of what had happened to his son. Subsequently, at a propitious moment, the Admur HaZaken* reproached his son and he explained to him that one must not act thus, that one must not absorb oneself in study to the point of not hearing the voice of a child who cries.

* * *

This account was transmitted from one generation to the next and, more specifically, it was told to us by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, leader of our generation. It is therefore certain that it delivers concrete teachings, in particular for us, within all of Israel. One of these teachings is the following:

A man must not absorb himself in any activity whatsoever, as important as it may be, to the point of not hearing the voice of a child who cries, in his proximity, in his surroundings or at a distance. Each man and each woman must hear this voice, interrupt one's activity, tend to this child who cries, do all that is in one's power to fill the lack that he experiences.

In our era, in particular, numerous are the babies and the children who, for whatever reason, have "fallen from their cradle," who have left the cradle of true Judaism or have never even been in it. Consequently, they cry, with a voice that one hears, or even with a profound voice that one does not hear (note 6: Through the voice of the soul, which finds no physical echo in the body, so that "the child" is himself unaware of the lack. The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the sequence of Chassidic* discourses of Rosh Hashanah* 5695"), due to the distress of their soul, which is a "particle of true celestial Divinity," which is hungry, thirsty for the Word of Hashem, for His Torah* and His Mitzvos*. Now, no one tends to them, no one endeavors to fill their lack of an education based on sacred values.

Likewise, numerous are those, among our brethren, the children of Israel who are adults by the number of their years, but have remained children, or even babies, regarding the Torah*, which is "our life" and the practice of its Mitzvos*. Now, if they see nothing, if they discern nothing, their Mazal* observes and they cry, because of their moral distress. Sometimes, they do not even know why it is so. Nevertheless, they feel a vertiginous void in their life, a life without content, without an objective worthy of the name.

One does not have the right to close one's ear to the complaints of these children of Israel, whether they be children by their age or by their degree of awareness of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*. This lesson, this Injunction and this Precept are indeed addressed to each man and to each woman.

"Do not commit transgressions against the child!" Interrupt all other activity, devote yourselves to this child and restore him to his Father, our merciful Father. In this way, he will study the Torah* of our Father and he will put into practice His Mitzvos*. It is thus that he will acquire eternal existence, a full, upright and good life.

* * *

In what manner can one calm the child, restore him to his father and fill the lack? For this, one must have recourse to the three loves, to the love of one's fellow, which is oriented by the love of the Torah*, whose basis is the love of Hashem.

In this way, one can undertake permanent actions, for the true good of one's fellow, both material and spiritual. The ultimate purpose is to lead him on the path of true Judaism, a life based on the Torah* of life, illuminated by the clarity of the wellsprings of Chassidus*, permeated by the enthusiasm that it instills.

* * *

May Hashem cause this Chassidic* gathering and those of the 19th of Kislev* that will take place in other locations, in our Holy Land and outside of it, to launch this call to all our brethren the children of Israel, may Hashem grant them long days and good years, whose heart is awake to hear the voice of the child who cries.

This call will invite one to undertake eager actions for the dissemination of the Torah*, in general and of the wellsprings of Chassidus*, in particular. In this way, one will combine both study and action, with enthusiasm, vitality and clarity. With my respects, my blessing for a great success in all that has just been said, Lechaim*, for life and for blessing,

Menachem* Schneerson,

* * *

* * *

* * *
