Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8540 — Chinuch
Volume 22 · Letter 323
By the grace of Hashem,
7 MarCheshvan* (note 1: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "End and conclusion of the festival and the pilgrimage, on this occasion, according to the Sifsei Kohen*, Choshen Mishpat*, chapter 43, paragraph 47. This text says: 'At the present time...' but one will see what the Admur HaZaken* says, in his Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, at the beginning of chapter 117: 'In our days as well...' One can think that this provides an answer to the question of the Sifsei Kohen*: it is not merely an expression. This means that one devotes oneself, literally, to the festival") 5723,
Brooklyn,
To the attention of those who devote themselves to the exceptional
and monthly collections of Machaneh Yisrael*,
may Hashem grant you long life,
I greet you and bless you,
I received, with pleasure, your letter of 28 Tishrei*, then the list of donors of the month of Tishrei*, to whom Hashem will grant long days and good years. At a propitious moment, I will mention their names near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us. The importance of all this is commensurate with the value of Machaneh Yisrael*. It is unnecessary to specify this, even less to develop a lengthy explanation on this subject. For, this institution was founded by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, leader of our generation and one knows his accomplishments, in general, as well as the detail of his actions, according to the program that was made public during his lifetime, in writing, then that was published subsequently.
You wrote your letter at the beginning of the period during which it was announced and is still being announced that: "Yaakov* advances on his path." In fact, perhaps it is possible to compare Yaakov* to Machaneh Yisrael*, as the verse that speaks of the children of Israel indicates, in an allusive manner (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Torah Or*, at the beginning of the Parshas Shemos*").
May Hashem therefore cause there to be advancement in this matter. And, Chassidus* defines what a true advancement is (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'If you walk in My Statutes,' of 5700, chapter 5"), from one stage to the next, until all limits and all obstacles are rejected. This will occur: "on his path," in two directions, first at the initiative of Hashem, the path on which it is commanded to us to advance (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "One will consult the Torah Or* and the Or HaTorah*, at the end of the Parshas Vayeitzei*"), then through the effort of man, "his path" (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "One will consult the Toras Chaim*, at the end of the Parshas Vayeitzei*"), the one of which he becomes master, with all that concerns him.
As has been explained elsewhere, one finds two explanations (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Zohar*, volume 3, pages 298a and 55b") regarding the end of this verse: "Angels of Hashem encountered him." Indeed, these two directions can unite, as this verse alludes to by the term Machanayim* (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "One will see the commentary of the Ramban* on the verse Vayeitzei* 32, 3. And, the Or HaChaim* says: 'Yaakov*, chosen of Hashem'"), two camps expressed in a single word. For, when "Yaakov* advances on his path" during the weekdays, throughout the year, he thereby extends Rosh Hashanah*, which is the place of the true choice. It is in this way that: "He chose for us our heritage, the pride of Yaakov*." With my blessing of success in this action, which will be done in joy and in enthusiasm,
