To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and assumes

a sacred mission (note 1: Teaching based on sacred values), the Rav Nachum Zev (note 2: Rav N. Z. Dessler, of Cleveland),

I greet you and bless you,

I received, with delay, your letter, to which was attached a copy of the letters of the Chassid*, of multiple accomplishments and good conduct, the Rav Yitzchak HaLevi (note 3: Rav I. Horowitz, the "Masmid." These letters were published in the collection Yagdil Torah*, published in New York, number 61, paragraph 110). I thank you very much for having thought to send them to me. This constitutes, according to the expression of our Sages (note 4: In tractate Shabbos* 10b), "a precious garment for him who is accustomed to wearing it" (note 5: Rashi* explains: "for the disciple of this master who knows how to appreciate the value of his teaching"). All of this confirmed to me what I heard, some time ago already and from several people, the fact that your father (note 6: Rav Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler), the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of multiple accomplishments and good conduct, not only studied the teaching of Chabad* profoundly, but, furthermore, disseminated it among his students, at least on various occasions, indicating its sources. I am surprised that several students and disciples seek to hide this fact. And, there is no need to say more, for this is astonishing and painful.

As the Sages say (note 7: In tractate Eduyos*, chapter 2, Mishnah* 9), in their Mishnah*, the father confers a merit upon his son, his perception and the straightness of his reasoning. I therefore have good hope that you do the same, I mean that you study Chassidus* profoundly and that you disseminate it in every place where your influence is exercised. For, if, tens of years ago, one saw the necessity of it, how much more is this the case in our era, in this orphaned generation, when the darkness is deep and intense, to the point that one affirms, one "demonstrates" that the darkness is light and the light, darkness. And, one acts accordingly. This period demands it, renders all of this necessary. Happy is the portion of all those who disseminate these wellsprings, until they reach the outside. With my respects, my blessing and asking you to excuse the delay in my responses, until now,

You are considering the publication of the letter on the Tzimtzum* (note 8: The contraction of the Divine Light that is at the origin of creation. This refers to letter no. 11). This was written briefly, according to the limits and methods inherent to correspondence. Nevertheless, this explanation already appears, in detail, in various books published elsewhere, with all the necessary depth in this matter. Moreover, some who considered themselves erudite committed errors in this matter, as the Admur HaZaken* indicates, in chapter 7 of the Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah*. A list, non-exhaustive, of these texts appears in the indices at the end of the Torah Or*, the Likkutei Torah* and the Derech Mitzvosecha*.

באיחור זמן רב קלבתי מכתבו בצירוף העתק מכתבי הרה"ח רב פעלים ובעל מדות מוה"ר יצחק הלוי ע"ה, ות"ח ת"ח על שימת לבבו לשלחם אלי, וכבר הודיעו חז"ל מילתא אלבישייהו יקירא.

ובזה נתאשר עוד יותר אצלי מה ששמעתי זה מכבר ומכמה אנשים, אשר אביו הרה"ג הוו"ח אי"א רב פעלים ובעל מדות וכו' ע"ה לא רק למד תורת חב"ד ובעיון, אלא גם פרסמה בין תלמידיו (ועכ"פ איזו פעמים גם בהוראת המקור).

ולפלא מה שכמה מהתלמידים והמושפעים משתדלים להעלים זה, ואין להאריך בדבר המתמיה ומצער.

ע"פ דברי חכמים במשנתם אשר האב זוכה לבן בחכמה בסברא הישרה וכו', תקותי חזקה אשר גם כת"ר עושה כהנ"ל, כוונתי ללמוד תורת החסידות בעיון ומפרסם אותה בכל מקום שידו מגעת.

והרי באם עשיריות שנים מלפנים ראו הכרח בזה, עאכו"כ בדורנו דור יתום אשר גדול החשך ונכפל, ועד לאמירה "והוכחה" ופעולה שיאמר לחשך אור ולאור חשך, שדרישת והכרח השעה היא, ואשרי חלקו של כל אחד המפיץ מעינות אלו ועד שיגיעו גם חוצה.

בכבוד ובברכה ובקשת סליחה על איחור האישור והמענה עד עתה.

להסברא ע"ד הדפסת המכ' אודות תורת הצמצום - הנה נכתב הוא בקצור וכו' וכפי הגבלת ואופן כתיבת מכ', וכבר באו הדברים באר היטב בכמה ס' שבדפוס - מתאים לעומק הענין וההכרח בזה, וביחוד כיון ששגגו בזה מקצת חכמים בעיניהם וכו' (שער היחוד והאמונה לרבנו הזקן פ"ז). ואיזהו מקומן (ולא כולם) מצויין במפתח שבסו"ס תורה אור, לקוטי תורה, דרך מצותיך.
