Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8537 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 22 · Letter 320 · To: final
By the grace of Hashem,
2 MarCheshvan* 5723,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your letter of 30 Tishrei*. I read therein with pleasure the impression that the men of Chabad*, in Kfar Chabad*, made upon you. I hope that its effect will also act in a concrete manner. I mean that you will profit from these impressions and that you will endeavor to make them known to others. For, according to the well-known saying (note 1: See, on this subject, letter no. 2278) of the Admur HaZaken*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, Chassidus* is not reserved for a certain group, heaven forfend. It is truly the heritage of every Jew. The Admur HaZaken* himself gave of his own person for this, then his successors, the masters of Chabad*, in each generation, did the same, disseminated it and they bestowed their blessing upon all those who make efforts in this direction. In the end, they will know success.
If this is so for every man, how much more is this the case for him who has the possibility of influencing the youth, which may seem to be merely an ordinary accomplishment but which modifies, in reality, their way of life, in general, especially when they marry and build a Jewish home. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to say more.
You ask me about the teaching of a secular trade with the head uncovered. Indeed, one can think that it will be, in this way, easier to find a common language. However, it is fitting here to distinguish two points:
A) One does not do "commerce" with what is said in the Shulchan Aruch*. One does not "sell" a light Mitzvah* to acquire a greater one except, of course, in particular cases that the Shulchan Aruch* cites clearly (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "clearly," "truth," "perfect" and "underline"), in which case it is no longer a matter of "commerce," heaven forfend, but indeed a rule of the Shulchan Aruch* identical to all the others.
B) Essential point, one can verify in practice, especially among the young, that a compromise (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 4464), even the lightest, devalues the one who adopts it, causes all trust in him to be lost. Indeed, if such a compromise is possible for the principles of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, this clearly means that they are not rigorously true. For, the truth does not know compromise. One does not deviate from it even by a hair's breadth. From the moment a compromise is introduced, one is no longer in the presence of truth.
Certainly, it is said (note 4: In the Midrash* Bereishis Rabbah*, chapter 8, paragraph 5) that: "truth demanded that man not be created," for: "There is no righteous man on the earth who does not commit a transgression." The philosophy of Chabad* explains all this and it also underlines that one must be close to each one, without the slightest exception. The assurance is given that even a single Mitzvah* can, in the end, lead to all six hundred and thirteen Mitzvos* at once. In any event, one loses nothing by doing so, as the Admur HaZaken* observes, in chapter 32 of the holy Tanya*. Consequently, if one cannot do otherwise, one begins by speaking of a single Mitzvah*. However, one must refrain from insinuating that this Mitzvah*, the one being discussed, is the only one, heaven forfend, that he who accomplishes it will be a perfectly righteous man. Quite the contrary, one must underline from the outset, although in a pleasant and peaceful manner, that it is solely a matter of one of the six hundred and thirteen Mitzvos*, but that, for various reasons, one cannot yet present them all. On the other hand, one will also subsequently ask for the practice of the other Mitzvos*, but the advancement must be gradual.
What has just been said concerns the demand toward the students. Conversely, these mitigating circumstances can in no way be granted to him who guides them. Quite the contrary, to formulate a demand to the students and obtain satisfaction, one must give the good example not only of what one expects of them, but also of the way of life one advocates. According to the terms of our Sages (note 5: According to tractate Berachos* 25b), one must be: "moist to the point of moistening," for the students will reason by a fortiori as follows: if their master can permit himself such a transgression, how much more can they themselves do so! This is quite evident.
One could develop all of this, but I have good hope that these few lines, underscoring the importance of education, will be sufficient. With my respects and my blessing,
