By the grace of Hashem,
13 Elul* 5722,
Brooklyn, New York,
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter (note 1: This letter was addressed to several people. See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 9, page 310). We are at the beginning of Elul*, the month of mercy and good will (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the beginning of the Mateh Efraim*") and, regarding this month, the Admur HaZaken* states (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "At the beginning of the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'I am to my Beloved,' in the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas Re'eh*, page 32b") the parable of a King who, before reaching the city, is welcomed by all the townspeople, in the field. From then on, whoever so desires can present himself before Him. He welcomes each one with benevolence and shows a smiling countenance to all. The Admur HaZaken* specifies (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "End of the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'To You, my heart says,' in the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5710, page 285"), on this subject, that "one is authorized to do so and one is able to do so."
May Hashem reveal all this, with regard to both the body and the soul, as well as for "the mundane days" (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Likkutei Torah*, at the same reference. Likewise, one will note that laughter and the smiling countenance are the expression of a submission that does not abstract from the ego, according to the Chassidic* discourses, at the beginning of the Parshas Toldos*"). As one can deduce from this parable, the King, being in the field, welcomes, with benevolence, the townspeople as they are in that place. Now, they are assuredly surrounded by the domains pertaining to the field (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Midrashim* of our Sages regarding the verse Toldos* 25, 27: 'A man of the field... dwelling in tents.' See the commentary of Rashi* on tractate Niddah* 66a") and, in some of them, salvation, blessing and success are needed.
Moreover, to use the well-known expression (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "On the eve of Rosh Hashanah* 5710, in the Sefer HaMaamarim*, page 17." See, on this subject, letter no. 8267) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, leader of Israel: "May Hashem grant the Jews a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually, in general and in particular. Thus, the Jews will do all that they can and Hashem will see what they are capable of doing." With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year, globally and specifically,
