Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8513 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 22 · Letter 296 · To: distingué et agréable ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
By the grace of Hashem,
11 Elul* 5722,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem, who devotes himself
to communal needs, has generous conduct,
is descended from an illustrious family, the Rav Sh. Z. (note 1: Shneur Zalman Shazar. See, regarding him, letter no. 8254),
I greet you and bless you,
I acknowledge receipt of your two letters, with what was enclosed, notably the report (note 2: Of the voyage to Russia. See, on this subject, letter no. 8446). Likewise, I have duly received your greetings, through the intermediary of Rav Mordechai Kirschblum and I thank you very much for all of this. Jews have the habit and custom of systematically making observations and how much more is there reason to do so in this case. I therefore express my fervent conviction that immediate conclusions will be drawn from this report, at least for our brethren, the children of Israel who are on this side of the iron curtain and, above all, for those who are in "the land toward which always are turned the eyes of Hashem, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year" and toward which "direct their mind" our brethren, the children of Israel who are on the other side of the iron curtain, according to the expression you yourself employ, in the greetings you transmitted to me. In fact, they mention it at every occasion and they thirst for all news of what happens there.
Your report underlines the signs of life and the perpetuity that our eternal people, the children of Israel, present. These signs are precisely the Mitzvos* they put into practice, in a concrete manner, beginning with an Injunction that defies all logic, circumcision, cut and sealed in their flesh, not solely in their soul, including in the flesh of a newborn of eight days, as the Midrash* and the Rambam* explain, the Devarim Rabbah*, at the beginning of chapter 6 and the Guide for the Perplexed, volume 2, chapter 49. In fact, this Mitzvah* could have been practiced even before this, but the Torah* wished that beforehand, the health of the newborn be strengthened. The immediate conclusion of all this is therefore the following. It falls upon us to come to the aid of our brethren, the children of Israel, enduring turmoil and captivity. No barrier, no limit must obstruct this aid (note 3: See, on this subject, Sefer HaMaamarim Melukat*, volume 4, page 89). For this, each man and each woman of those who are on this side must strengthen themselves in the concrete practice of the Mitzvos*, displaying themselves publicly, with pride, with the consciousness that: "He has chosen us" (note 4: According to the text of the blessing of the Torah*) and "He has sanctified us by His Commandments" (note 5: According to the text of the blessing of the Mitzvos*). It is in this way that one can counter the clandestinity and the pressures, to the point of breaking the morale, of those who practice the Mitzvos* on the other side of the iron curtain.
Of course, I understand that such an idea will not be very "popular," especially if one takes into account the state of mind that prevails lately (note 6: See, on this subject, letters no. 8399 and 8431) in the street, in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. However, the lack of popularity takes nothing away from the truth of all this, from the force of reality and from its necessity. I also know that one will be able to advance the following argument: what has just been said is incumbent upon each man and each woman, personally. It is therefore not the affair of such institution, such political party or such group of men. This objection is rigorously exact. Nevertheless, taking into account the importance of the capacities and the opportunities that are offered to all, to men as to institutions, the responsibility is increased proportionally, as is the challenge issued to each one to fulfill this mission.
I heard (note 7: See, on this subject, letter no. 1882), once, my father-in-law say that a Chassid* is intelligent. He therefore does not put off until tomorrow what he can accomplish today. In this case, the promise has been made to us that "none of us will be cast away," according to the terms of the prophet Yechezkel*, "this will not be... I will reign over you with a mighty arm." Furthermore, following upon what has been said, Jews appreciate new ideas, in particular when they are surprising. Now, one observes that, lately, several delegates from the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, in the diaspora, have been asked to observe, notably, Shabbos* (note 8: See, on this subject, letter no. 8383) and Kashrus*, because they are viewed as the representatives of our Holy Land. Then, when they leave the lands of the nations to return to the Holy Land, they are freed of these directives and these obligations!
I am convinced that you will not hold it against me for what is indicated above. For my part, I will say no more, although there would have been reason to develop all this at length. Indeed, for someone like you, this would be unnecessary. Nothing has been accomplished, for the moment, concerning the buildings (note 9: That are to be built in Kfar Chabad*) and this causes much pain. Yet a committee was indeed designated and it even has a president (note 10: Sh. Z. Shazar himself!). Certainly, you give me the reasons for this in your letter and it is useless to complain about the past (note 11: According to tractate Berachos* 54a). May Hashem therefore cause that at least in the future, this project advance, at the most rapid pace, in conformity with the necessity and the need of the moment.
We are in Elul*, the month of mercy and may Hashem therefore cause you to give me good news of your relatives who remained there (note 12: In Russia) and whom you mention in your letter of 18 Menachem* Av*, of a visible and tangible manner. With my respects and my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
M. Schneerson,
No doubt you received, in due time, my preceding letter.
