Eve of Rosh Chodesh* Elul* 5722
I respond (note 1: This letter is addressed to Rav Pinchas Aharon Weberman and it was written directly on his letter of the eve of Rosh Chodesh* Elul*. See, regarding him, letter no. 8291) to your question (note 2: Rav Weberman wrote: "I personally put into practice the Mitzvah*: 'And, you shall teach them to your sons.' Now, my eldest son, Yitzchak Eliyahu, will be eight years old, please Hashem, on 13 Cheshvan* next. He already has a good knowledge of the Chumash*, with the commentary of Rashi*. What should be done henceforth? Should he begin the study of the Gemara* immediately or first that of the Mishnah*? Furthermore, whether it be Mishnah* or Gemara*, what is the first tractate that must be studied?"). It is quite evident that the study of the children of Israel bears first of all on the Mishnah* and only then on the Gemara*. I have not, however, received precise directives in this matter. You will therefore ask those who have always devoted themselves to education based on sacred values.
