Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8501 — Chinuch

Volume 22 · Letter 284 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

22 Menachem* Av* 5722,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

the Rav Yehoshua Zev (note 1: Rav Y. Z. Schwartsman, of Tel Aviv. See, regarding him, letters no. 7553 and 7661),

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I have duly received your letter of 15 Menachem* Av*. At a propitious moment, your name and that of your wife, to whom Hashem will grant long days and good years, will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, in conformity with what you write to me. May Hashem cause you to give me good news on this subject. Moreover, our Sages give us the assurance (note 2: In tractate Gittin* 28a) that what is postponed can be postponed definitively. You will therefore strengthen yourself in directing your holy community. You will continue to disseminate among them the study of our holy Torah*, of its revealed part and of Chassidus*, as well as the practice of the Mitzvos*, in the best manner.

The assurance has been given to us (note 3: In tractate Yoma* 38b. See the Likkutei Torah*, commentaries of Shemini Atzeres*, page 88b) that one comes to the aid of him who desires to purify himself. And, the Admur HaZaken* specifies that this also includes the fact of purifying others. Furthermore, this attitude brings an increased blessing for him who consents to this addition and who pushes aside all that obstructs it. Indeed, he who is ill cannot have a good understanding, a fortiori when many people have need of him (note 4: That he must therefore not only understand for himself but, in addition, answer the questions of others). On this subject, you will consult the Laws of Opinions, of the Rambam*, at the end of chapter 3 and at the beginning of chapter 4. We are approaching the month of Elul*, that of mercy. As the Admur HaZaken* says, the King is then in the field and He receives each one with benevolence, shows a benevolent countenance to all, as the Likkutei Torah* explains, in the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "I am to my Beloved." With my respects and my blessing to give me good news of all this,
