I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter (note 1: This letter is addressed to a woman) of this Tuesday, "when twice was said the word good" (note 2: On the third day of creation). At a propitious moment, your name will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, so that the wish of your heart be positively fulfilled. It is surely unnecessary to emphasize to you that an addition to what concerns the Torah* and the Mitzvos* strengthens the blessings of Hashem. In this matter, conduct, however good it may be, can always be improved.

You are considering the adoption of a Jewish child. This can only be so in exceptional cases, when one is absolutely certain that his parents scrupulously observed the Torah* and the Mitzvos*. In the absence of such certainty, it is preferable that his mother not be Jewish. By converting the child, one thereby removes all doubts and resolves all problems.
