Volume 22 · Letter 271

By the grace of Hashem,

5 Menachem* Av* 5722,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I have duly received your letter of 2 Menachem* Av*, which in no way explains this interruption and in which the essential is lacking, since you tell me nothing either of the time you fix for the study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, in general. Moreover, you do not tell me what you and your wife are doing, while you are currently on vacation. Now, your voyage to our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, is made within the framework of a mission that was entrusted to you.

You allude to thoughts that disturb you and that therefore have an influence on your morale. You know, however, the saying of the Sage according to which there is no joy like that which one experiences when one is delivered from doubt. Now, from a positive formulation, one can deduce a negative one, which means that a doubt troubles a man, by nature. The means of reducing this trouble, then of making it disappear completely, is therefore to resolve the doubt. Now, regarding you in particular, for yourself and for your wife, there is no doubt. Indeed, seven blessings were recited (note 1: At the wedding), mentioning the Name of Hashem and His sovereignty, according to the formula established by the members of the Great Assembly, who received the ordination transmitted, from one generation to the next, since Moshe* our master. You have therefore indeed built an eternal edifice, "as Your creation rejoiced in the Garden of Eden, in the beginning." The same applies for your voyage here and, for this reason, as I have already said, the sooner you make this voyage, the better your peace of mind will be and therefore your morale.

As for the point at the end of your letter, the duration of this voyage and the period of your visit to the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, why do you trouble your mind with questions that will not arise for several months, all the more so since in the meantime, there will be Rosh Hashanah*, when one is inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, of a good that is visible and tangible? For, Hashem alone knows (note 2: What will be subsequently). In conformity with your request, the present letter is sent to you bypassing the queue. No doubt you will answer me, as will your wife, the question that is posed to you at the beginning of this letter. I enclose an extract from the Chassidic* gathering of the festival of the liberation (note 3: Of the Previous Rebbe*, from the Soviet prisons) of 12 and 13 Tammuz*, in order to draw inspiration from it for the entire year. The text is sent to you in English, for, at present, it has not been translated into another language. In any event, the content remains the same. With my blessing to give me good news of all this,
