Igrot Kodesh · Letter 817 — Shidduchim

Volume 4 · Letter 52 · To: jeune homme

By the grace of Hashem,
7 Kislev 5711,
Brooklyn,

To the young man, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav ... and the young woman ...,

Greetings and blessings,

The Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself faithfully to communal needs, Rav ..., spoke to me about the letter you wrote to him and about the fact that you solicit my agreement and my blessing for your engagement. You also ask him in what manner you will have to organize your life in the future.

Men in general, and Jews in particular, when they become engaged, ask Hashem to grant them success. And Hashem fulfills their request when they call upon Him from the depths of their heart. They build, from then on, an eternal and solid edifice.

Every term used by our Sages is precise. This is also the case for the word edifice.

When one builds a house, this house must, above all, be solid. For this, the foundations on which it rests must be solid.

But there is a great difference between the foundations and the rest of the house. For the latter, one takes into account not only the deep qualities, but also the outer appearance. The latter has, by contrast, no importance as far as the foundations are concerned. It suffices that they be solid and strong, built with the best materials.

It is the same for an engagement between young Jews. The foundations of this union must correspond to what is the vocation of a Jewish home. They must be sufficiently strong to resist all trials.

The building materials used by Jews are Torah and mitzvot. Chassidic homes possess, in addition, the deep warmth and clarity that Chassidut* confers on Torah and mitzvot. This teaching has been spread in each generation by the masters of Chabad and, for ours, by our leader, my father-in-law the Rebbe.

Concretely, this means that you must commit yourselves, on a daily basis, to studying Torah and practicing mitzvot, to having good conduct, Chassidic feelings, the most important of which is ahavas Yisrael*, as many sichot* of my father-in-law the Rebbe explain. This implies kashrus*, observance of Shabbat, taharas hamishpacha*, fixing a time to study Torah, tzedakah*, brotherhood, and other points still.

All this should be put into practice as Chassidut expects of each of us.

If you commit yourselves to all this, I address to you my blessing that your engagement should be in a good and fruitful moment. You will found a Jewish home, based on Torah and mitzvot, as they are presented by the teaching of Chassidut.

With my blessing,
