Igrot Kodesh · Letter 811 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 4 · Letter 46 · To: distingué ‘Hassid
By the grace of Hashem,
28 Mar-Cheshvan 5711,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid*, former student of the Yeshiva,
Rav Yitzchak Aharon [1], the shochet*,
Greetings and blessings,
I read with pleasure your letter, which was undated, informing me that you have begun your action for the Talmud Torah and for the teachers giving private lessons to students at their homes.
I also received in due time your letter from before Rosh Hashanah, in which you briefly traced your biography. In this regard, I would like to reiterate once more my request. You tell me that you were one of those who were in the service of my father-in-law the Rebbe in Rostov in 5681 [2]. Could you write down everything you remember from that period? If you would do so, I would be deeply grateful. The more you detail, the better. I hope that you have precise memories and that you will be willing to write them down.
I will comment on certain points evoked in your letter:
A) At the conclusion of the account of your existence — which will be long and good — you say: "my whole life has been bad." Now, just before that, you say you were a student of Yeshiva Lubavitch for six years. You had the merit of serving my father-in-law the Rebbe for his personal needs, which are also public, insofar as he possessed a collective soul. You led communal action and, in this way, put into practice the instructions of the Rebbe.
Then, you were imprisoned for six years. There too, the Rebbe's strengths enabled you to spread Torah and Yiddishkeit*, to put mitzvot into practice. If after all this you say that your life has been bad, I do not know what good is.
B) Your letter informed me of what you accomplished, before Sukkot, in Paris, in Metz, and in the region, to promote good chinuch*, to strengthen Yiddishkeit and the study of Chassidut*, qualitatively and quantitatively, the number of your students, and the homes you visit from time to time. I was very satisfied with this.
But my satisfaction was mingled with sorrow when I read, in your letter received today, that a cheder* has been opened and that it is attended by eight students [3]. I have good hope that this is only the very beginning, and that very soon, the appropriate effort will allow the number of students and homes visited to be brought to what it was at the end of last summer. Of course, one will not be content with that and will develop these activities.
You will rejoice me by giving me good news on this. The more you multiply them, the sooner they will reach me, and the better it will be.
I enclose a short letter [4] destined for those who assume this sacred task under your direction. If its content corresponds to the situation, please transmit it to them and let me know.
With my blessing for good health, for success in your sacred mission, and for forming others in this sense,
Menachem Schneerson
