Igrot Kodesh · Letter 81 — Chanukah Halacha: Seven-Point Analysis of the Miracle, the Oil, and the Menorah
Volume 1 · Letter 81
By the grace of Hashem,
Sunday, eve of Rosh Chodesh* Tammuz
To the great Rav, erudite and respectable, Rav Ch. B. [1]
I greet you and bless you,
I wish to inform you, by the present, that we organized here, last week, a conclusion of the Mishnah* [2] that was learned by heart by the Mishnah group of Machaneh Yisrael*. After this conclusion, a redistribution was made for the new year, whose conclusion will take place the day after Shavuos 5704.
We would therefore like to encourage once again all our friends, especially those who cherish the Torah, and yourself in particular, to become members of this group, to make it known among your acquaintances and your connections, emphasizing to them the importance of purifying the atmosphere [3] through the words of the Torah, moreover affirmed in various texts of the revealed part of the Torah (...).
One must strive that all integrate into this group and recite Mishnah by heart, while walking in the street, as my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita*, explains. These permanent contributions to the Mishnah group will have a capital contribution, for a Mitzvah* put into practice by the greatest number receives an entirely different dimension.
I apologize for not having been able to respond to your letter in its time, due to my many occupations. These are no less numerous now, but I will nevertheless respond to some of the questions posed in your letter:
A) You do not accept retaining the two reasons for which the Chanukah* lights are lit in ascending order — first because everything must increase in the domain of holiness, then to establish the number of days of the holiday that have passed [4]. A controversy opposes our Sages on this subject, but I said that this does not prevent retaining both, and this is what you contest (...).
It remains possible to clarify the meaning of my affirmation. For example, one who, for any reason, begins to light the candles in the middle of the holiday, will have to take the same number as the others if one takes as reference the number of days that have already passed, whereas a single one will suffice for him if he considers the necessity of increasing in the domain of holiness, which only requires lighting in ascending order (...).
The obligation to increase in the domain of holiness is derived from a verse of the Torah, whereas the consideration of the days already passed of the holiday is based solely on logic.
B) You cite the opinion according to which the fast of the destruction of the Temple could have been fixed on the 10th of Av, the date on which the majority of the Sanctuary was burned. But it is also said that the damage caused by fire is taken into account at the moment it is lit, that is to say, in this case, the 9th, without taking into account what it causes subsequently. Then, how can one consider fixing the fast on the 10th of Av?
I confess I do not understand the meaning of this question, for it is a matter, in this Talmudic passage, of determining on which day the Jews must mourn the misfortune that befell them and not of knowing at which moment the action carried out by the non-Jews reached its conclusion.
Thus, if someone wounds his fellow and the latter dies some days later from the effects of this injury, it is clear that the relatives of the deceased will be in mourning from the day of death and not from the date of the aggression.
C) You emphasize that the Temple was destroyed by the fire of Hashem, Who can make it disappear at any instant. Our Sages say, however, that a decree accompanied by an oath cannot be revoked. Now, this was indeed the case during the destruction of the Temple (...).
Nevertheless, everything depended, in this case, on Teshuvah, and it is said that "everything is in the hands of Hashem, except the fear of Hashem."
One can, however, go in your direction and consider that this is not the essential reason for what happened and that nothing therefore prevented Hashem from making His fire disappear at any instant.
D) You also question me about the holiday of Chanukah. You say that the flask of oil could, from the first day, potentially burn for eight days. How then were the natural laws respected? You conclude that the miracle renewed itself at each instant or each day. You do not express it clearly, but it seems to me that this is indeed your conclusion.
One can respond to this question in different ways:
1. I wrote that the miracle conferred upon the oil the strength to burn for eight days, which explains the opinion of Beis Shammai*, requiring lighting a number of candles corresponding to the days remaining of the holiday. For, if it were not for this, why would one need to take them into account from the beginning of the holiday? Now, you wonder if this reasoning is correct, while in refuting it, you remove all legitimacy from the opinion of Beis Shammai.
2. The miracle had to last eight days. Certainly, seven were needed to purify the Sanctuary, one day to manufacture the oil, four days to travel to the place where one could do so and four days to return. But all this was established from the first day and was not added subsequently. Nevertheless, it was only the following year that one could perceive that the miracle had eliminated all interruption of the lighting. But it was indeed so from the first day, for the miracle could occur only through this flask of oil.
3. Moreover, one knows that there are no unnecessary miracles (...) and, if one says that the miracle renewed itself at each instant, it would follow that it was unnecessary when it was broad daylight (...).
E) I questioned myself, in my letter, about the opinion according to which the quantity of oil was divided into eight equal parts, since the instruments of the service of Hashem, used in the Temple, had to be full, and this was also the case for the Menorah*. But I realized that this conception was false, for this oil was sanctified not by placing it in the Menorah, but as soon as a certain quantity of it was placed in the Temple. There was therefore no impossibility that this Menorah not be full.
One can, moreover, ask why the reservoirs of the Menorah were larger than the quantity of oil they had to contain. One can explain, nevertheless, that when one had only thick wicks, one had to increase the quantity of oil.
F) You note that the lighting of the Menorah was not defined as an act of the service of Hashem in the Temple. Consequently, the Rambam* emphasizes, this lighting could be performed by one who is not a Kohen*. Then, you ask, why was the inauguration of the Menorah done by lighting it?
Now, the reason is clearly established. The inauguration of an instrument is the first normal use of it in the Temple. In this case, that of the Menorah therefore consisted indeed in lighting it. Nevertheless, the Mishnah specifies that this inauguration had to take place at sunset and the Rambam specifies that one then had to light all seven lights, then remove the ashes in the morning. It matters not, therefore, when these lights were prepared.
One therefore had to place the wicks, then the oil. One could do so in the morning or in the evening, provided that the ashes were indeed removed in the morning.
Certainly, the lighting of the Menorah is not an act of the service of Hashem — not that this lighting is unimportant, but rather because the intervention of man is not determinative. Indeed, it requires no effort on his part, since the flame must rise by itself, which is independent of this act of inauguration.
G) You also write that the presence of the table, the Menorah, the altars and the curtain is indispensable for performing the sacrifices. But it is said, moreover, that the construction of the altar lasted eight days and was completed on the eighth. It follows that there was no altar during the lighting of the Menorah and that this was therefore without value.
According to this interpretation, this lighting was simply a Mitzvah and not, strictly speaking, an act of the service of Hashem in the Temple. This is why it was not necessary that it be full of oil. Likewise, many ask why a miracle was necessary since the notion of impurity does not apply to what is public. What has just been said provides an answer to this objection, since the lighting of the Menorah was a Mitzvah and not a sacrifice.
Your argument is surprising. For the notion of impurity and Shabbos* are mentioned in the same verse and, according to your reasoning, one would have to ask how they could light the Menorah during Shabbos. Now, this lighting was indeed done during eight consecutive days, as various sources establish. Moreover, how did they use a Menorah consecrated to the service of Hashem to perform an act that did not participate in it? One can, however, consider that it was then a new Menorah, whose profane use remains permitted as long as it has not been used for the service of Hashem.
But one can be astonished by such an interpretation. For, if the Torah does not make it obligatory to light the Menorah, it is indeed "a strange fire that Hashem did not request." And one who enters the Temple for a purpose other than the service of Hashem is punished with lashing.
On this subject, I would like to add a word, related to our topic.
The Megillas Taanis* (...) explains that the purification of the Sanctuary was begun at the end of Marcheshvan* or at the beginning of Kislev*. Then, why did they wait until the 25th of Kislev to inaugurate the Temple? I found an explanation for this, in the books of the later generations, according to which "they built a new altar, brought new instruments of service and placed the Menorah in the Sanctuary. They lit its lights. Then, on the 25th of Kislev, they rose early and offered sacrifices on the altar. They then celebrated the inauguration of the altar for eight days." Indeed, it is an established custom that one may cite such books.
Moreover, one can say that the presence of the previously cited instruments is necessary only for the service of Hashem performed inside the Sanctuary. It is not appropriate, however, to cite the Holy Ark among these instruments, for it was not found in the Second Temple (...).
Another source, on the other hand, does not mention the curtains and does not differentiate between what is performed inside the Sanctuary and what takes place outside of it. Nevertheless, one can note that no act of service is related to the Holy Ark or the curtains. Indeed, even during the sprinkling of blood, it is not obligatory that it touch the curtain.
To my knowledge, this Halacha does not appear in the Rambam (...).
With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah, immediate redemption,
