Igrot Kodesh · Letter 809 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 4 · Letter 44
By the grace of Hashem,
28 Mar-Cheshvan 5711,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I enclose a copy of my letter to Mr. David Bubis. It would be good if you found the occasion to discuss with him the visit he made here, in order to encourage him to put into practice what was said here and, in general, to emphasize to him the importance of influencing those around him. I hope to have good news of the success you will know in this domain.
I follow up on the two letters [1] I wrote to you before the festival. Due to the occupations of the month of Tishrei, which has a general scope, I was unable to pursue my discussion concerning the university. I will therefore do so now, although I have not received a response to my two letters.
You might hold the following discourse: "Despite what the Rambam* says at the end of the second chapter of the laws of divorce, it seems to me that I want to attend the university and pursue studies there. But someone tells me that, given my situation, such an approach is inappropriate. I am, indeed, a former student of Yeshiva Lubavitch, a disciple of the Rebbe, and one whom the Rebbe accompanies at every step. Consequently, if I go to the university, I compel him to follow me into that place.
"Indeed, our Sages say in tractate Makkot 10a that when the student goes into exile, one compels the master to follow him. Nevertheless, who tells me that I am bound by this opinion? I will momentarily cease being a student of Yeshiva Lubavitch, chas v'shalom*. I will stop, for some time, being a Chassid* of the Rebbe, may Hashem preserve me from this. From then on, no one will be able to reproach me for anything."
In fact, you can no longer act in this way. The revealed part of Torah stipulates that the convert can no longer recover his former state, chas v'shalom. Even if he commits sins later on, he remains a Jew, from the moment he was converted once. And it is the same also in the domain of holiness. He who has become a Chassid, attached himself to the Rebbe, makes the Rebbe attach himself to him, "as the face is reflected in the water." From then on, he can no longer break this bond, chas v'shalom, since it depends also on the Rebbe who, in his great kindness, chains himself to him.
This can be compared to what Iggeret HaTeshuvah says at the beginning of chapter 7: "The king is bound by chains, those of the spirit. It is for this reason that the Holy One blessed be He is called a humbled King." You will consult this text. It is the same for the Tzaddikim*, and in particular for the leaders of the generation, especially those who are bound to the inner part of Torah. The Zohar, volume 2, page 38a, says, indeed: "Who designates the verse by the expression 'the Face of the Eternal'? Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai."
The Nitzotzei Orot, citing the Yaavetz, says that the word et, superfluous in this verse, in fact introduces the scholars of Torah. But Chassidut*, in the maamar* "lift up your eyes to the heavens" of 5688 [2] and "I will not go" of 5699 [3], says the contrary. It is, properly speaking, the Name of Hashem that designates Rabbi Shimon.
The commentators on the Zohar cite, in support of this affirmation, tractate Bava Batra 75b, the Yerushalmi Bikkurim, chapter 3, paragraph 3, the Midrash Shmuel, chapter 7, the Zohar, volume 2, pages 124b, 163b, volume 3, page 79b, Rabbeinu Bechayei, on Parshat Tissa, in his commentary on the verse "whoever seeks the Eternal." You will also consult the Or HaTorah of the Tzemach Tzedek*, Parshat Shemot, pages 39 and following.
I do not wish to lengthen my discourse, for I am convinced that when one shoots an arrow in the air, it falls back on its tip. Your source will therefore reveal itself, that is to say your attachment to my father-in-law the Rebbe, which will express itself by committing yourself "to the straight way that he has traced for us and that we will take, following in his footsteps." You will announce to me good news in this domain.
Of course, you will do so as soon as possible. You know that days have been created and that a man receives a certain number of them, in order to transform the part of the world entrusted to him. It is unfortunate to lose a day, an hour, an instant that would not be devoted to the accomplishment of the mission for which your soul descended here below.
In the hope of receiving good news and greeting your family,
Menachem Schneerson
