To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid*, who fears Hashem,
Rav Yechezkel Yehudah [1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter of Monday of the parsha "this is the sign of the covenant" [2]. My response was delayed because of the month of Tishrei, which has a general scope.

I learned with pleasure that you are beginning to devote yourself to taharas hamishpacha* (family purity). This domain has unfortunately been abandoned and set aside. And it is painful to see that an inappropriate sense of modesty causes upright and Hashem-fearing people to avoid speaking about it.

How true are the words of my father-in-law the Rebbe, who, in his sichot*, calls the yetzer hara* "the little clever one," for he knows how to address each person in the terms that suit him, to make him lose his head.

He explained, in the name of his father, the Rebbe Rashab*, that the yetzer hara is not described as the nefesh habahamis* (animal soul) because it is precisely an animal. Sometimes, it can be a fox, the most cunning of animals, so that great perspicacity is needed to thwart its strategies. Other times, it takes the appearance of a Tzaddik*, upright and humble, animated by good feelings. The animal soul depends on the deep nature of each one.

All this receives a direct application in this domain. Modesty is, in fact, one of the three qualities specific to the Jewish people, who are merciful, modest, and do good. The yetzer hara therefore makes use of this quality to prevent words that are indispensable and touch on the happiness of a couple, of their children, and of their descendants, until the end of generations.

I have transmitted your request for booklets on family purity to the office. These will be sent to you, by parcel, by ordinary mail.

קבלתי מכתבו מיום ב' לס' זאת אות הברית, ומשום טרדות דחודש תשרי הוא חודש הכללי נתאחר המענה שלי.

נעם לי לשמוע שמתחיל להתעסק בענין טהרת המשפחה שבעוה"ר כ"כ עזוב ונדח ועוד גדול הצער שמפני רגש הבושה שלא במקומו יש יראים ושלימים המתביישים לדבר בזה.

ומה נתאמתו דברי כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ בשיחותיו, אשר יצר הרע נקרא בשם "דער קלוגינקער" משום שמתלבש בלבושים המתאימים לכל אחד ואחד להעבירו על דעתו, וכמו שאמר בשם אביו כ"ק אדמו"ר (הרש"ב) נ"ע: היצה"ר נקרא נפש הבהמית לא מפני שהוא בהמה דוקא, כי לפעמים הוא שועל פקח שבחיות, וצריכים לחכמה מרובה להבין תחבולותיו. ולפעמים הוא מתלבש בלבוש צדיק תמים ענ[י]ו ובעל מדות טובות.

בכל אחד ואחד הנה"ב שלו היא לפי מהותו הפרטי כו'.

ודבר זה רואים בעליל בנידון דידן, שהרי מידת הביישנות היא מג' מידות של ישראל, רחמנים ביישנים גומלי חסדים, והיצה"ר משתמש במידה זו למנוע מדיבור הכרחי הנוגע לאשרם של איש ואשתו ובניהם אחריהם עד סוף כל הדורות.

בקשתו בדבר חוברות בענין טהרת המשפחה באנגלית מסרתי למשרד שישלחו לו בדואר הרגיל בחבילה בפני עצמה.
