Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 11 Mar-Cheshvan. You ask me whether you should participate in the Melaveh Malkah* of the office for Hebrew education, by giving there a presentation on the thought of the Baal Shem Tov.

I deduce from your letter that:

A) You are not obliged to do so, and if you abstain, no harm will come to your Talmud Torah.

B) You fear the bad effect that your participation in this Melaveh Malkah could have. You do not see what could result from a single presentation. You therefore find no reason to do so, with the benefit of the doubt, and you prefer to abstain.

You write me that the young men and young women of your shul wish to organize themselves, to beautify the shul, and also to create a club there. In my opinion, this is a good initiative. You fear that mixed dancing could result, but you will know how to find the means to prevent it without controversy resulting. You will find them positive activities — lectures during which they themselves will speak, debates on questions related to Torah and mitzvot or to Jewish history, a library, a reading room, a tzedakah* fund or mutual aid fund, an exhibition, for example of Chanukah objects just before that holiday, and other activities still.

I was very satisfied with the account you gave me of Shemini Atzeret in your Talmud Torah. It is one more proof that, according to the expression of my father-in-law the Rebbe, an effort is never in vain. It is the same for your shul, especially for the young men and young women. There too, you will know success with the appropriate effort. Thus, you will obtain success also in your personal affairs.

במענה על מכתבו מי"א מ"ח: אם להשתתף במלוה מלכה של הביורא לחינוך עברי בהרצאה אודות שיטת הבעש"ט - הנה כנראה ממכתבו א) אינו מוכרח לזה כי לא יהי' היזק להת"ת גם אם לא ישתתף ב) חושש לרושם אי רצוי שתעשה השתתפותו במלוה מלכה שלהם, וכיון שאינו רואה תועלת גדולה מהרצאה אחת הרי למה לו להכנס לענין מסופק ושב ואל תעשה עדיף.

מה שכותב שהצעירים והצעירות בביהכנ"ס שלו רוצים להתארגן ולשפר את ביהכנ"ס גם לעשות קלוב שיהי' שייך לביהכנ"ס וכיו"ב לפי דעתי נכון וטוב הוא, ומה שחושש אולי עי"ז יבואו לרקודי תערובות וכה"ג - בטח ימצא דרכים המתאימים למנעם מזה, וכיו"ב, ובלי כל מחלוקת ויעסיקם בענינים כשרים וטובים: הרצאות (בהשתתפותם היינו שמהם ג"כ יהי' מרצים), וכוחים ע"ד שאלות השייכות לתומ"צ או לדברי ימי ישראל, יסוד ספרי' ואולם לקריאה, יסוד קרן של גמ"ח או של צדקה, תערוכה של ענינים השייכים לחנוכה קודם לחנוכה וכו' ועוד כהנה.

נהנתי במאד לספורו ע"ד השמע"צ בת"ת שלו, וזוהי ראי' נוספת לפתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ שתעמולה אינה חוזרת ריקם, והוא הדין לביהכנ"ס שלו ובפרט להצעירים והצעירות, ובעבודה המתאמת יעלה ויצליח בעניניו הנ"ל וזה גופא ימשיך הצלחה גם בעניניו הפרטים.
