Igrot Kodesh · Letter 79 — Melikah and the Beinoni: Self-Constraint as the Highest Form of Divine Service
Volume 1 · Letter 79
By the grace of Hashem,
Tuesday, 12 Sivan, to my friend, learned and refined man, the Shochet* Rav A. S. [1],
I greet you and bless you,
I ask you to excuse me for the delay in responding to your letter, which is due to various reasons. Here is what I would like to say to you:
The study of the Mishnah by heart will conclude on Sunday, 17 Sivan, and a new distribution for the coming year will then be made, that is, until the day after Shavuos 5704. We hope that you yourself and your friend, Rav M. T. [2], as well as all the Chassidim, will organize such a distribution in your city, with even more ardor than last year.
We have sent to your city publications that were edited here. These were sent to the address of Rav M. T. and we earnestly request that you come to his aid and invite all those who are capable to take part in their dissemination and sale. For this, a committee of enthusiastic young people will be formed, or any other organization, according to local conditions. And may Hashem bring about very soon the fulfillment of the promise according to which "your wellsprings shall spread outward," for it is then that our righteous Moshiach will come.
We wrote about all of this to Rav M. T., who has no doubt already received our letter. You will therefore come to each other's aid and Hashem will grant you success.
We will conclude by mentioning a Torah idea. You sent me a parable regarding the melikah* (wringing of the neck of the bird) [3] and I thank you for it.
Considering, as our Sages affirm, that every Torah idea can receive numerous interpretations, I will briefly develop what this melikah teaches for the service of Hashem, basing myself on Chassidus.
The melikah is performed at the level of the nape and it allows the separation of the head from the body, that is to say, in particular, from the heart. Thus, the incision is made from the nape and reaches, secondarily, the trachea and the esophagus.
Here is what corresponds, in the service of Hashem, to the difference between the face and the nape. The face symbolizes the rational form of this service, when the heart and the feelings conform to the instructions of the brain.
The nape, on the other hand, evokes stubbornness, the "stiff neck," the recourse to submission and constraint, despite the desires of the heart, in order to adopt the proper behavior.
In the service of Hashem, poultry and the animal evoke the "intermediate men," the Beinoni* defined by the Tanya* and the wicked, whereas fish are the righteous, as is explained elsewhere. Moreover, these three levels also exist within man's personality and correspond to the intellectual soul, the body, and the animal soul. I explained all of this in my previous letter [4].
The Tanya gives a precise definition of the intermediate man and the wicked man. The first has never adopted bad behavior and the attraction to evil found in his heart never has the opportunity to express itself concretely, for his intellect directs his feelings. Nevertheless, evil strongly marks his personality. Moreover, it grows stronger and stronger, and this is why there is mention, regarding him, of the nape.
The nape evokes the necessity of imposing constraint upon oneself, despite all logic, when the evil, in all its force, can manifest at any moment. Moreover, it happens that this "intermediate man" is troubled. Then, the clarity of the soul and the intellect leaves him. In such a case, there is no other means than to force oneself and repel the evil inclination.
It is quite clear that this "animal," that is to say the wicked man, whose evil can attack thoughts, words, and actions — the "inanimate" part of his soul — must demonstrate the most total submission, the "inanimate" phase of the service of Hashem. And if, before receiving the Shechitah*, the animal is already incapable of submitting, it is to be considered Treif*.
Nevertheless, all of this is true only outside the Temple. By contrast, when a bird is offered as a sacrifice within its precincts, it becomes inconceivable that man could experience another desire. For, in that place, souls submitted totally to Hashem, like the flame of a candle integrating into that of a torch, and this is why one prostrated oneself there, face to the ground.
Now, the effort of men must be commensurate with the Divine revelation one wishes to obtain. The service of Hashem, in such a case, must therefore be like the "face," as perfect as one's level permits. The equivalent is not true for the animal, whose effort must be intense. For the bird, the melikah is therefore performed from the nape, while the face is preserved. In such a case, the trachea and the esophagus are severed last.
This melikah is performed by the Kohen himself, who, in such a case, does not act as an emissary of Hashem, whose action, therefore, would be Divine. Indeed, serving Hashem profoundly, by one's own effort, is the means of receiving the profound revelation of Hashem. One can thus understand why the Shechitah can be performed by one who is not a Kohen, but not the melikah.
Since the destruction of the Temple, the equivalent of all this is found during prayer and the study of the Torah, since the synagogue and the house of study are called "small sanctuaries."
The Tanya will allow us to understand what has just been said. It explains, indeed, that the intermediate man experiences, in an evident manner, love of Hashem "at certain times, for example during the reading of the Shema Yisrael* or the prayer, when the intellectual analysis can be deepened" or again "when he marks his desire for the Torah of Hashem, as in saying the Shema Yisrael or the prayer." Thus, the love of Hashem experienced by the "intermediate men" during prayer is indeed comparable to that of the righteous.
With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah, immediate Geulah,
Rav Menachem Schneerson,
Director of the executive committee [5]
