Igrot Kodesh · Letter 785 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 4 · Letter 20 · To: sein de ce réseau
By the grace of Hashem,
5 Cheshvan 5711,
Brooklyn,
To the Rav, Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav M.[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letters of Friday, the eve of the Shabbat* "so that you may be elevated" [2], of Thursday of the Ten Days of Teshuvah*, and of Thursday, the day after Sukkot*. The many occupations of the month of Tishrei did not allow me to do so earlier. Even now I have little time, and so I will write briefly.
I read the requests for blessing that you sent, with the list of students, on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, at the gravesite, and during the days of Rosh Hashanah, in his room, where he received people and granted blessings.
Without a doubt, the Tzaddik* of the generation, my father-in-law the Rebbe, has granted his blessings, and the Almighty will fulfill them completely, in both the material and spiritual domains.
Likewise, I mentioned at the gravesite the names of the three heads of family of the city of Midlat whom you cited to me [3]. You will find enclosed the letters I am addressing to them [4], as you suggested. You will surely let me know what comes of this.
You mention your financial difficulties. Several external factors are also the cause. In any event, I have good hope that the situation will improve.
You have no doubt received all the fascicles, including that of Shemini Atzeret, with the letters that accompanied them. I would like to know whether you were able to find a favorable moment to disseminate their content, or at least that of the sichot*, in the widest circles and in different cities.
Thank you for having sent me the book that the Rav of Midlat [5] gave you. Please remind him from time to time that he should send other books. Likewise, if you meet other authors or descendants of authors of sacred books, it would be good to suggest that they offer them to our library. Of course, if they wish, we will send them our publications. Please indicate to me what kind of books we should send to each one in particular.
It is extremely positive that you seize every opportunity to explain, in every possible place, what Chassidut* is. I await further information on this from you. Without a doubt, the blessing of my father-in-law the Rebbe accompanies you in this activity as well, so that it may be fruitful.
Without making a vow, I will write in these days to the Rav of Midlat.
Concerning the student you mention, it is proper to draw close to him in the appropriate manner. When the occasion arises, please ask him on my behalf whether he received my letter and, in general, how his wedding went. As you asked me, I will write in these days to his wife.
You will no doubt let me know when you have obtained your visa [6]. Thanks to the connections you already have on the ground, you will surely be able to arrange that everything goes for the best.
You tell me that you feel alone, isolated, and that your work weakens in consequence. Your conclusion allows us to establish what is the starting point: an intervention of the yetzer hara*, which tries to weaken each person in the fulfillment of the mission entrusted to him, according to his particular character.
You know the saying of my father-in-law the Rebbe [7], according to which "Chassidut has brought it about that one is not alone. Its masters are present wherever one finds oneself." How much more so is this the case with my father-in-law the Rebbe, who wrote himself, upon the passing of his father, that the shepherds of Israel do not abandon their flock. Iggeret HaKodesh explains this in chapter 27 and in its commentary.
Physical limits have now disappeared. Our masters thus find themselves with each and every one of those attached to them, wherever they are, especially there where they have sent them to carry out the shlichus* entrusted to them — all the more so when this shlichus consists of spreading the wellsprings of the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov outward. For it is in this way that one prepares the coming of Mashiach*, the resurrection of the dead, when "they shall awaken and rejoice, those who rest in the earth." He [8] himself will be among them.
You will consult the sicha of 13 Tammuz 5709, printed in the fascicle of 12 Tammuz 5710, and you will draw from it enthusiasm, inspiration, and strength to accomplish your work in the place where you are. You will then understand, by appealing to logic, that there is no reason to think that you are alone and isolated, chas v'shalom*, nor, of course, that your work should be weakened.
It is unfortunate that the Chassidim, especially the former students of the Yeshiva, do not consider with attention the words of my father-in-law the Rebbe, including in these sichot, and particularly what he said in 5710 and the previous year.
You tell me that where you are, they use esrogim that grow locally and that the Rav considers kosher, the trees not having been grafted. However, you examined them and did not find seeds in them [9]. If it is certain that they are reputed kosher, it is nevertheless permitted to take them to recite the blessing on the Four Species. Indeed, the signs of recognition [10] given concerning them do not come from the Torah, and their reputation, once established, is particularly strong.
You will consult the fascicle published on the occasion of Sukkot, which says that we have the custom to use specifically esrogim from Calabria. The Alter Rebbe explained that it was necessary to do so for a reason known to him. Nevertheless, in several countries, they use esrogim of other origins. Their validity has been established for several generations, and it is therefore difficult for me to raise a doubt or cause perplexity.
However, it is clear that all this does not concern us, Chabad Chassidim. We must hold to the opinion of the Alter Rebbe and pronounce a blessing on esrogim from Calabria. Concerning the signs of recognition, you will also consult the books cited by the Shaar HaKollel, chapter 37. The responsa of the Chatam Sofer, which are also mentioned there, affirm that esrogim from Calabria dispense with all signs of recognition. One can conclude that their importance is not decisive, even when they introduce a restriction.
I would like to know where branches of palm and willow are taken from in the country where you are now.
Awaiting your good news, and with greetings to all your family,
Menachem Schneerson
You ask me about the blessing after the meal. The Likutei Meir and the Birkat Yaakov, based on the Ikrei HaDat, chapter 9, paragraph 36, and on the responsa Teshurat Shai, paragraph 571, say that one who recited [11] the blessing after having consumed cakes in place of the one that follows the meal has not fulfilled his obligation and must therefore repeat this blessing.
I do not have these books, but it seems they justify their position by pointing out that this blessing makes no mention of the covenant and of the Torah [12]. You will consult on this subject the Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, chapter 187.
I have just received your letter of Monday of Parshat Noach and the copy of the one of Wednesday of the same parsha. I have already said that the financial problems would be settled. We are writing today to Paris [13] to arrange, in this matter, a definitive organization.
And may Hashem grant that we have sufficient shluchim* and financial means to carry out all that must be accomplished in Morocco and in the neighboring countries.
I have transmitted to the office your request concerning the copies of the Gemara and the fascicles.
It is not desirable to develop evening classes for those who attend the Alliance schools, because those who wish to entrust the education of their children to these institutions would find in this a support for their approach.
A generic name will be given to all our institutions: Ohalei [14] Yosef Yitzchak. Within this network, we will distinguish the different categories: Talmud Torah, Tiferet Bachurim [15].
