Igrot Kodesh · Letter 781 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 4 · Letter 16

By the grace of Hashem,
13 Tishri 5711,
Hillula of the Rebbe Maharash,

To the Rabbi, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem,
Rabbi Y. [1],

I greet and bless you,

You will find enclosed the fascicle published on the occasion of the festival of Sukkos*, which includes a chassidic discourse, a sicha, a letter and a collection of customs. You will make it available to the largest number of people, depending on the specific conditions of the place where you find yourself.

Each man and woman, far beyond the rest of the year, must show love to his fellow and bind himself to him during the festivals of the month of Tishri, which has a general bearing.

Rosh Hashanah* is the day of the coronation of the King of the world, as it is said: "Proclaim Me your King." Hence, "there is a King in Yeshurun," which is possible "before the assembly of the heads of the people, all the tribes of Israel together."

Before Yom Kippur*, one must reconcile with one's fellow. One can thus identify oneself with the angels, who know neither jealousy nor rivalry.

On Sukkos*, our Sages perfectly expressed what was accomplished by emphasizing that "all the children of Israel are fit to dwell in a single Sukkah*."

Then, on Shemini Atzeres*, the Holy One, blessed be He, says: "Offer Me one bull and one ram, for it is hard for Me to part from you."

During the festival of Sukkos*, this idea is particularly emphasized by the Mitzvah* of taking the four species. Various texts, in particular the discourses of the one whose Hillula* we celebrate [2] — for example, the sequence entitled 'Vekacha,' which he pronounced in 5637 [3] — explain why it is precisely these four species. They show that all four allude to the unity of Israel.

Moreover, one must, furthermore, unite all four together, as the Beis Yosef and the Turei Zahav emphasize, citing the Recanati. Certainly, the esrog alludes to scholars of Torah who fulfill Mitzvot*, the lulav and the hadas designate those who possess one or the other, and the aravah those who lack both. But Hashem affirms that He grants elevation, 'E'eleh,' through these four species — Esrog, Aravah, Lulav, Hadas [4] — according to the Zohar, vol. 3, p. 263a, the Tikkunei Zohar, Tikkun 13, and other references, as it is said, "I will ascend (E'eleh) the date palm," the tree which designates the assembly of Israel, according to the verse: "Such is your stature, you have the appearance of a date palm."

In a pleasant manner, one can deduce from the saying of our Sages, previously cited — "all the children of Israel are fit to dwell in a single Sukkah*" — the possibility of accomplishing the Mitzvah* by taking one's place in a borrowed Sukkah*. It is precisely in this manner that it represents, for each of its users, the value of a perutah* [5], in accordance with the commentary of Rashi on tractate Sukkah 27b.

For a single Sukkah*, which surrounds and reveals the Essence of Hashem, as the end of my father-in-law the Rebbe's discourse in this fascicle explains, must also respond to the Injunction of the Torah "you shall make for yourself" [6]. It can be so thanks to the effort invested in putting Torah and Mitzvot* into practice, in transforming the matter of the world.

And this must be worth at least a perutah*, the sum that allows the acquisition of a person, according to tractate Kiddushin 3b. One can, therefore, fill oneself with profound enthusiasm before Hashem, as the end of this discourse says.

As our Sages emphasize, this Sukkah* must indeed be lent to other Jews, so that each one, whoever he may be, possesses the value of a perutah* in it. Each, indeed, possesses a quality the other does not have, and for which the latter has need of him.

With my wishes for a joyful festival and for success in your dissemination to the largest number, so that all may form one and the same assembly, to accomplish the Will of our Father Who is in Heaven, with a whole heart,

M. Schneerson,
