Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7664 — Chinuch
Volume 20 · Letter 221 · [10 Sivan 5721]
(10 Sivan* 5721)
I duly received your letter of 8 Sivan*. It is, naturally, with the greatest surprise that I took note therein of your surprising idea, since you envisage that one of your sons leave an atmosphere permeated with Torah*, with Chassidus* (note 1: Presumably the Lubavitch Yeshivah*) and with everything related to it, in order to enter an environment directed by those who reject such an approach. In our era, it is impossible to say that one has not been made aware of Chassidus*, of its content and its directives, regardless of the group of Torah* scholars to which one belongs. Now, such awareness means that the one who possesses it no longer finds himself in a neutral situation, for Chassidus* demands not only that one be attracted to it, but also that one act concretely in this direction. One can accept it, reject it, or, at most, evacuate the entire question from one's mind. But, those you cite in your letter, for whatever reason, do not adopt this last position (note 2: But display an active rejection of Chassidus*). On the contrary, they intend to express their position clearly in this matter.
All of this would be valid in the same way if it were not a matter of a child of Chassidim*, especially with the capacities and the knowledge that your son possesses. How many students like him are there, from whom he can draw closer, from what I know, according to the letters they write me and the information I obtain indirectly (note 3: The woman who received this letter presumably explained to the Rebbe that her son had not found a study partner)! It is clear that a study partner must correspond not only in training and aptitude, but also in character. You will therefore take counsel from those who know these young men and, among them, you will choose those who seem to you most fitting. And, Hashem will grant you success.
It is fairly certain that the state of mind of your son, about which you write to me, is in no way explained in the manner you indicate. It derives from the change of climate, from your departure from here to go to the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. This is self-evident. I address to you my blessing so that, together with your husband, the Rav, you educate all your children in a manner conforming to the will of our masters and leaders. And, you will derive from them a true satisfaction, a Chassidic* satisfaction, in every sense of the term.
