Rabbi Yosef, may he live, known as Dr. Burg[1]

Peace and blessing!

Toward the Festival of Shavuos, the season of the giving of our Torah, which is coming upon us and upon all Israel for good and for blessing, I send you my blessing for a joyful festival. And in the language of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, zy"a:

For receiving the Torah in joy and inwardness.

With respect and blessing.

P.S.

A matter of the day, and particularly as I know that you love wit and parables and play on words — as many of our brethren the children of Israel enter into the cauldron of the elections, and in accordance with the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that from every matter that a Jew sees or hears, he must learn a moral lesson in his service of his Creator — may it be the Will that they learn a kal vachomer from the elections: If the elector, who is only flesh and blood, even so the (prospective) elected one strives with heart and soul to find favor in his eyes, and no trouble or effort — whether physical or spiritual — is difficult for him, to the point that no food is pleasant to him and his sleep flees from his eyes, provided only that he actually be chosen — how much more so regarding the One Who chose His people Israel (and especially) with love, as was at the time of the giving of the Torah: is it not right that one should conduct himself in the aforementioned manner, and in similar ways — to find favor in the eyes of the Elector and to be truly chosen. And moreover: regarding the human elector, the elected one must reward the elector [of course, if the promises of the election-time are kept; and the Jewish people are presumed to be proper, whose mouth and heart are the same]; whereas regarding the One Who chose His people Israel in love — He is the Giver and the chosen one is the receiver; and what the chosen one must give to the Elector — the study of Torah and the fulfillment of its mitzvos — this too is for the good of the chosen one.
