Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7648 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 20 · Letter 205 · To: jour de Lag Baomer

By the grace of Hashem,

26 Iyar* 5721,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

We are in proximity to the Hilula* of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai* (note 1: See, on this subject, letter no. 7639) and that of Rabbi Yisrael Baal Shem Tov* (note 2: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "The first is on Lag BaOmer* and the second, on Shavuos*"). The mission of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai* consisted of bringing the profound dimension of the Torah*, including its hidden part, which, by itself, cannot be revealed, to the Sages* of the Mishnah*, as Chassidus* explains (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See, on this subject, the Chassidic* discourse of Lag BaOmer*, as well as the one following it, in the series of discourses entitled: 'He separated,' of 5631"). Moreover, he himself opened the way so that this influence could be revealed from the outset in his generation, in which young children (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Zohar*, volume 1, page 92b. See also the Kedushas Levi*, Parshas* Chayei*") themselves unveiled the secrets of the Torah*.

Furthermore, after this, as Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai* himself reports (note 5: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Zohar*, volume 1, page 118a. See also page 117a"): "When one approaches the Messianic era, the children of the world will also be able to discover the hidden aspects of Wisdom." The present moment is therefore propitious for strengthening oneself and for redoubling one's ardor, in an evident manner, in the dissemination of the profound dimension of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed through the wellsprings of Rabbi Yisrael Baal Shem Tov* — the teaching of Chassidus*.

On this day of the Hilula* of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai*, the highest perfection of his spirit was revealed in him — his source, which is also that of Moshe* and that of Moshiach* (note 6: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Siddur* of the Alter Rebbe*, at the end of the gate of Lag BaOmer*"). Now, when "these days are commemorated," they are also "relived" and one can then obtain from them the revelations, the blessings. The influence of this Hilula* must be exercised upon the entire Counting of the Omer* that follows it, for it is then that all (note 7: The students of Rabbi Akiva*) ceased dying. This is self-evident.

May Hashem therefore grant that each person act, to his measure, in order to bring to light this encouragement and this addition, throughout the year and with joy. In this matter as well, the Hilula* of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai* is particular. In fact, various texts emphasize that this day is distinguished from others and that it must necessarily be joyous (note 8: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "The Mishnas Chassidim*, tractate Iyar*, chapter 1, Mishnah* 6, says: 'On the day of Lag BaOmer*, it is a Mitzvah* to rejoice in the joy of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai*.' Now, this work reports only the words of the Arizal*, as the Alter Rebbe* explains and as the Tzemach Tzedek* rules in his Piskei Dinim*, Yoreh Deah*, paragraph 116. See also the Pri Eitz Chaim*, gate of Lag BaOmer*, chapter 7. This enables not only the exclusion of mourning, but also the establishment of both the joy and its reason, since, in this case, it is indeed the joy of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai*, according to the Zohar*, volume 3, pages 287b and 291a. What has just been said is the answer that can be given to the question posed, in particular, by the Responsa* of the Chasam Sofer*, Yoreh Deah*, chapter 233, and by the Responsa* Shem Aryeh, Orach Chaim*, chapter 14. And, one will also see the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 493"). With my blessing to give good tidings,

M. Schneerson,
