Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7645 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 20 · Letter 202

By the grace of Hashem,

24 Iyar* 5721,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, in which you raise the following points:

A) There is a young man who, although finding himself in a religious Kibbutz*, does not manage to accustom himself to the religious life. One senses in him no feeling for the Torah* and its Mitzvos*. Nevertheless, our Sages* do say that words emanating from the heart penetrate the heart. By speaking to him with closeness, without polemicizing, limiting oneself to making proposals, you will certainly succeed in influencing him. Nevertheless, not all characters are identical. To some, it is necessary to speak on several occasions, until the effect of this intervention is perceptible to eyes of flesh and is concretely applied — but, in any event, in the end, you will indeed know success. One of the concrete means for achieving this is to make him a leader of those who are younger than him, regarding religion, the study of Torah*, and the practice of its Mitzvos*. The responsibility that he will feel will cause him to evolve, will lead him to deepen himself, to be in a position to provide explanations to those entrusted to him. But, of course, one must be vigilant in this matter and verify that he does not make errors in the explanations he transmits.

B) Is every Jewish man and every Jewish woman capable of living their life in conformity with the teachings of our Torah*? It is clear that this is indeed the case. And, basic logic establishes, if one believes in the living Hashem, Who gives the Torah* and commands the Mitzvos* to each man and each woman, Who did so the first time in the singular — "I am Hashem your Elokim*" and not "your (plural) Elokim*" — in order to establish that the Torah* and its Mitzvos* are the concern of every Jewish man and every Jewish woman, that one must admit that the Holy One, blessed be He, will not demand of man what he is incapable of doing. On the contrary, before issuing an Injunction, He provides the means and the possibilities of putting it fully into practice — moreover, of doing so with joy and enthusiasm. Indeed, it is in this way that one studies and practices, as various texts establish. Nevertheless, for a reason known to the Creator of man, every Jew receives free will, because the Holy One, blessed be He, wished that, of their own volition, all would choose the good and upright path, as it is said: "See, I have placed before you... and you shall choose life." Furthermore, the assurance has been given to us that: "If you make efforts, they will be crowned with success."

I have good hope that you have a fixed time for the study of Chassidus*, in addition to that of the revealed part of the Torah*. May Hashem grant that this study lead to action. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

For the Rebbe* Shlita*,
