Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7639 — Grief & Loss

Volume 20 · Letter 196 · To: jour de sa Hilloula

By the grace of Hashem,

Lag BaOmer* 5721,

Hilula* of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai*,

Brooklyn, New York,

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter of 9 Iyar* (note 1: This letter was addressed to several persons. See, regarding it, letter no. 7648). This day is that of the Hilula* of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai*, whose objective and accomplishment was the revelation of the esoteric dimension of the Torah* to the Sages* of the Mishnah*, including its hidden part which, by essence, cannot be divulged, as Chassidus* explains (note 2: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See, on this subject, the Chassidic* discourse of Lag BaOmer* and the one following it, in the series of Chassidic* discourses entitled: 'And he cut,' of 5631"). Moreover, he opened the channel of this revelation, first for his generation, so that even children could have access to the secrets of the Torah* (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "As explained by the Zohar*, volume 1, page 92b, and the Kedushas Levi*, Parshas* Chayei Sarah*"). Furthermore, he enabled this access also for the following generations. Thus, in his own words (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "In the Zohar*, volume 1, pages 118a and 117a"): "When one approaches the Messianic period, the children of the world will themselves be able to discover the profound secrets of Wisdom."

This moment is therefore propitious for motivating oneself and for redoubling one's ardor, for the purpose of revealing and disseminating the profound teaching of the Torah*, which, in our era, is revealed through the wellsprings of Chassidus* and its teaching. On the day of his Hilula*, the highest perfection of his spirit is revealed. His source, indeed, was the same as that of Moshe* and that of Moshiach* (note 5: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "According to the Siddur* of the Alter Rebbe*, at the end of the gate of Lag BaOmer*"). Now, when "these days are commemorated," they are also "relived," with the blessings and the influence they bring. And, one knows the explanation that the Arizal* gives of this expression.

May Hashem grant that each person act, to the measure of his means, in order to prolong this motivation and this addition, throughout the year, with joy (note 6: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "The Mishnas Chassidim*, tractate Iyar*, chapter 1, Mishnah* 6, says indeed: 'On Lag BaOmer*, it is a Mitzvah* to share in the joy of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai*,' according to the words of the Arizal*, and one will also consult the words of the Alter Rebbe*, in the Piskei Dinim* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, Yoreh Deah*, chapter 116. See also the Pri Eitz Chaim*, gate of the Counting of the Omer*, chapter 7. This justifies that one rejoice on this day and that one not merely remove the signs of mourning. For, it is indeed 'the joy of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai*,' according to the expression of the Zohar*, volume 3, pages 287b and 291a. And, this explanation resolves the discussion on this subject found in the Responsa* of the Chasam Sofer*, Yoreh Deah*, chapter 233, the Responsa* Shem Aryeh, Orach Chaim*, chapter 14, and other texts. One will also consult the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 493"). In this matter, the day of the passing of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai* indeed possesses a particular character. Various texts explain that it is in no way comparable to similar commemorations and that it must, above all, be joyous. With my blessing to give good tidings, in general as well as in a specific manner,
