Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7636 — Shidduchim

Volume 20 · Letter 193 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

8 Iyar* 5721,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav Yitzchak Yehudah (note 1: Rav I. Y. Stern, of Brooklyn),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, in which you propose a change to me (note 2: Rav Stern proposed that the Rebbe*, as an exception, personally officiate at the marriage of a young man, although he had already ceased doing so). Now, in conformity with the Halachic* ruling of our Sages*, in tractate Shabbos* 10b, it is clear that: "One must not change." Such a proposal therefore does not even need to be formulated. Indeed, the Rambam* rules the Halachah* in accordance with this opinion of our Sages*. And, one can furthermore measure the important consequences of a change if one considers what the Tosafos* say at this reference, and especially the Shnei Luchos HaBris*. Furthermore, the event from which is deduced the necessity of not changing presented, in fact, the strongest reasons to justify that such a change actually be adopted, as our Sages* observe regarding the verse: "He was the son of his old age" (note 3: This is why Yaakov* favored Yosef* over his brothers, which was therefore a legitimate approach. Despite this, by doing so, he aroused the jealousy of his brothers, who sold him). Moreover, they cite precisely the verse: "These are the generations of Yaakov* — Yosef*" (note 4: Attesting that Yosef* was the essential descendant of Yaakov*). And, this occurred before our Sages* issued any Injunction in this matter. Despite this... (note 5: Yosef* was sold by his brothers). How much more must it therefore be the same after this Injunction (note 6: Not to change) was stated. Another point, which is also essential — "all are beloved, all are..." and this applies also to his friends (note 7: Therefore, why officiate at the marriage of one and not that of the others?). You will also consult the holy Tanya*, at the beginning of chapter 32, which says that: "all (note 8: Jewish souls) are identical." You will therefore excuse me for not accepting your proposal.

I reflected and asked myself why you wrote to me to formulate it, although the answer seems evident. But, in fact, who knows? Perhaps there is here an opportunity for me to repeat to you the words of the master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, who emphasized, repeated, on every occasion, the great necessity of establishing a fixed time to study the profound teaching of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*, especially during the last days of this exile, whose darkness is deep and intense. It is then particularly necessary to disseminate the wellsprings (note 9: Of Chassidus*) outward. It is in this way that "the master will come" — King Moshiach* — according to the well-known holy epistle of the Baal Shem Tov*. To someone such as yourself, it is surely unnecessary to say more. With my respects and my blessing,

Regarding the superiority of Yosef* over his brothers, one must cite the words of the Alter Rebbe*, at the beginning of the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "To understand the source," in the Torah* Or, addenda to Parshas* Vayechi*, which specify: "There the tribes ascended: On the other hand, it is said that 'Yosef* was brought down.' It is for this reason that they did not recognize him. In fact, they had nothing in common and what was an ascent for them therefore constituted a descent for him." You will consult this text.
