Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7634 — Chinuch
Volume 20 · Letter 191
By the grace of Hashem,
Eve of the holy Shabbos* 5 Iyar* 5721,
Brooklyn, New York,
I greet you and bless you,
I duly received your letters of the second day of Rosh Chodesh* Iyar*, as well as the one that preceded them (note 1: The same letter was addressed to several persons).
The Parshah* of this week begins with the verse: "When a woman conceives and gives birth to a male child," and you know what the Alter Rebbe* explains in this regard (note 2: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Torah* Or, page 37c, and the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Vayikra*, page 2c. See also the commentary of the Or HaChaim*, on this verse"). In the service of Hashem, this means that when the initiative of the effort emanates from the children of Israel, "the child is a male" — an immutable fact.
The month of redemption is coming to an end and may Hashem grant that it be so for the salvation of Israel. It is said (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Sanhedrin* 97b") that: "The Holy One, blessed be He, will cause to arise for them a king whose decrees will be as harsh as those of Haman. Thus, in a single instant, the Jews will attain Teshuvah*. Joyfully, they will return to the good and will be immediately liberated." Hashem will therefore guide the Jews toward the truth. Indeed, He Himself placed within man the evil inclination, defined as "the king of the small city (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Nedarim* 32b")" that his body constitutes. The decrees of this king are terrible, like a high and hard mountain (note 5: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractates Sukkah* 52a and Bava Basra* 10a"), comparable to those of Haman who wished to destroy the Jews, materially and spiritually. For, the evil inclination is also the Angel of Death (note 6: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Bava Basra* 16a").
But, in any event, the Jews will return to the good. They will ascend to the source of this good (note 7: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Bamidbar*, page 1d") and this will be the redemption that will not be followed by any exile, that will be true and complete. Then, we will sing a Song — Shir*, in the masculine (note 8: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tosafos*, tractate Pesachim* 116b"). With my blessing that you give me good tidings of all the subjects you mention in your letter, whether communal activities or personal concerns,
