Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7631 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 20 · Letter 187

By the grace of Hashem,

23 Nissan* 5721,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of the fourth day of Chol HaMoed* Pesach*. It is absolutely certain that you must devote yourself to the activity to which you allude. I am even surprised that you have a doubt in this regard. This is so for various reasons, and first of all because it must be done and you are an expert in this matter, despite the unfortunate facts you report to me. Regarding the actual content of your letter and the one that preceded it, I am astonished to observe that such objections were not sent to the right address, for, if this had been the case, your complaints would have been immediately eliminated. I will explain myself.

Divine Providence* has granted you broad and elevated capacities, as well as the enthusiasm that is necessary for them to receive concrete application. I am alluding to teaching, to the gift of organization, and to communal activities. However, two elements prevent you from using them as you should and to the fullest extent possible. For some reason, you do not wish to change the situation and it even seems to you that this is not possible. The first of these elements is collaboration with others, as in the case of two partners, both interested in the success of their enterprise and who, as a result, must consent to certain concessions. You must understand what I mean. The second point, which one frequently encounters in human nature, is that your enthusiasm prevents you from having a methodical and planned activity. In fact, collaboration with others bears fruit in this domain as well, since it ensures that one is not disturbed by the enthusiasm of the other. In such a case, one can foresee and anticipate the activity in advance.

Nevertheless, your qualities and the points cited above largely counterbalance these two drawbacks, without, however, making them entirely disappear. You have surely observed this yourself, in the past, by noting that the final balance is positive, not in an average way, but indeed generously, even if there have also been shortcomings, as has been observed. To conclude, it is indispensable and judicious, not only spiritually but also materially, to maintain your present activities. However, you will endeavor, to the extent possible, if it is impossible to make these two elements entirely disappear, at least to reduce them.

Another point, mentioned at the end of your letter — you tell me that you spoke to one of the elder Chassidim*, who became angry with you. While presenting my apologies to this elder Chassid*, among all the other elder Chassidim*, I must, for my part, adhere to what I heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, that is, the observation that "the act is essential" — and, indeed, a Mishnah* establishes this clearly. Now, if one tallies the concrete actions carried out by these elder Chassidim* in this city, one can observe that the Yeshivah* they founded experienced decline, then disappeared completely, even if this took some time, for afterward, Chassidim* from Russia arrived who took personal initiatives in this matter, going against the counsel of these elder Chassidim*. It is in this way that the Yeshivah* was created.

More generally, the situation of the city is well known, as is that of the Chassidic* synagogues and their action to disseminate the wellsprings. It is therefore not surprising that these men counsel others to imitate them. And, those who adopt their conceptions can observe the consequences of what these elder Chassidim* have concretely accomplished. In this way, they are in a position to deduce with certainty what all the accomplishments of Chabad* will be if one listens to them, Heaven forbid. In fact, it is surprising to observe that, ordinarily, they have difficulty concerting on anything, whereas, when it is a matter of refraining from action, they are unanimous and, with a single word, a single heart, they form a single assembly. And, it is unnecessary to say more, so painful and dreadful is this. Of course, you have the possibility and the authorization to show these few lines to those who counsel, to you and to persons like you, to remain inactive.

Based on what I know of your character, there is every reason to think that your first reaction, upon reading my letter, will not be, as I would have wished, the decision to intensify your actions. On the contrary, you will say to yourself, to use the expression of our Sages*: "Why should I impose such trouble upon myself?" or, what is even more negative, you will be discouraged. It is for this reason that I reiterate once more what is said in the first lines of the present letter. You possess extraordinary enthusiasm and elevated capacities. You can therefore use them fully, you must do so, and it is indispensable that you do so, which will be your material and spiritual good. Of course, you will give priority to the actions of Chabad*. Moreover, as I have written many times, success is granted in abundance for everything that concerns Chabad*, beyond what one can imagine. However, if one wishes to obtain it, concrete actions are necessary and one cannot content oneself with thoughts, reasoning, exchanges during meetings, whose conclusion is the necessity of doing nothing, or the observation: "I have saved myself, since I have made my opinion known." On the contrary, effective accomplishments are indispensable, broad actions, in conformity with the teaching of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*.

May Hashem grant that you read my letter and understand it according to its true content and its objective, so that it raises your morale, materially and spiritually, and that you multiply your actions, there too materially and spiritually. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this and, as I have said, with joy and enthusiasm,

M. Schneerson,
