By the grace of Hashem,

4 Nissan* 5721,

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I duly received your letter of 28 Adar*. At a propitious moment, your name will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. Just as you transmitted this request to me, may Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of everything in your letter, in particular of the actions taken for the dissemination of the wellsprings (note 1: Of Chassidus*), which is in no way connected to the affirmation of our Sages* according to which "a prisoner does not free himself" (note 2: No one can decide to free himself from this dissemination, for it is incumbent upon all. One who carries it out therefore acts under compulsion). Indeed, it is in no way a prison, Heaven forbid. This was already the case in the country where we were previously (note 3: In Soviet Russia, despite the persecutions inherent to the period), where such a situation did not exist (note 4: No one was under compulsion and Chassidus* was disseminated of one's own free will). All the more so is this the case in these regions. Moreover, one can verify in practice that the simplest action taken in the framework of such dissemination is, at the present time, particularly fruitful, so that everything truly depends only on the will.

What is said here does not have the purpose of moralizing, Heaven forbid, but rather of expressing my pain in observing that the Chassidim*, particularly those who are protected by their ancestry (note 5: Descended from illustrious families), do not at all make use of the immense possibilities that have been granted to them in this matter. Moreover, this increases joy, enthusiasm, and therefore physical health in the most literal sense. This is self-evident. In this month of Nissan*, as we approach the festival of Pesach*, the time of our freedom, you will experience, for everything you write to me in your letter, liberation from all constraints, and you will announce good tidings to me. With my blessing for a Kosher* and joyous festival of Pesach*,

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מכ"ח אדר.

ובעת רצון יזכירוהו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע מתאים לתוכן כתבו, ויהי רצון שכשם שכתב הבקשה כן יבשר טוב בכל האמור במכתבו, ובזה ג"כ בהנוגע לפעולות בהפצת המעינות שאין לזה כל שייכות למאמר חז"ל דאין חבוש מתיר עצמו מבית האסורים כי אין כלל מצב של בית אסורים ח"ו ומכש"כ וק"ו ממדינתנו לפנים שגם שם בענין זה לא הי' מצב כנ"ל עאכו"כ במדינות אלו, ואדרבה רואים במוחש שכשמשתדלים אפילו בפעולה קלה ביותר בהפצה האמורה, דוקא בשנים אלו מצליחה ביותר וביותר ואין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצון.

פשוט שאין הכתוב בא בתור מוסר ח"ו כי אם הבעת צער על שאין אנ"ש וביותר אלו שגזע צור מחצבתם מסייעתם, מנצלים כלל וכלל גודל האפשריות שניתנה להם בהאמור, ובפרט שזהו מוסיף ג"כ בשמחה וטוב לבב ובמילא גם בבריאות הגוף כפשוטו, וק"ל.

ובעמדנו בחדש ניסן ומתקרבים לחג הפסח זמן חירותנו, יהי' בכל ענינים הכתובים במכתבו חירות מכל ענינים המבלבלים ויבשר טוב.
