Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7610 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 20 · Letter 166

By the grace of Hashem,

27 Adar* 5721,

Brooklyn,

I bless you and greet you (note 1: This letter is addressed to a woman),

After a long interruption, I duly received your letter of 10 Adar* and, in accordance with your request, the present letter is addressed to you bypassing the queue. You describe to me your difficulties with your eldest son and you ask me how to succeed in influencing him (note 2: Indeed, he wishes to marry a young woman who is not observant and who would become so only for the purpose of marrying him). It is clear that in such a case, there are no fixed rules, for each person is different and characters and capacities are not the same. Everything also depends on the state of the relationship between the two people (note 3: In this case, between the son and his fiancee). But in any event, the point common to all situations is the following: by intervening in a pleasant manner, one achieves success most of the time, far more than through the opposite approach and intervention. When the two points are linked — marriage and education toward a religious life, meaning when it is a matter of modifying the other party's worldview with a view to marriage — this is particularly difficult. In any event, it is indispensable that she adopt a religious way of life some time before the marriage, so that she knows what she is committing to, the resulting difficulties to which she was not accustomed beforehand. In the words of our Sages*, "A man does not acquire what he does not know the definition and nature of. He does not make a commitment in this matter." At a propitious moment, all those you cite will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of each of them.

I also have the obligation to formulate the following remark, although this is not pleasant for me, all the more so since I already alluded to it in a letter I addressed to your husband. Indeed, what is happening here, as well as other situations you describe in your letter, are almost certainly the consequence of his attendance at schools that do not correspond to your expectations, nor to those of your husband. To our pain, in conformity with human nature and in accordance with an error that is committed with particular frequency, when one expects one's children to adopt a worldview and religious conduct of a certain level, one strives to give them an education — scrupulously if need be — that does not lead them to surpass their parents, much less to do so considerably. And one does not take into account the fact that if a man who has reached maturity maintains a certain religious practice, it is because as a child and then as a young man he was at a higher stage. In such a case, even if the vicissitudes of life, the battle it imposes, as well as one's surroundings, reduce the commitment of youth, this is nevertheless preserved at maturity. It follows that one who, as a young man, is already at a lower stage will lose it subsequently, after a few years, and will thus find himself in a situation inferior to what one would have wished.

It follows from all this that you and your husband wished that the fear of Hashem of your children be the equivalent of your own. You should therefore have entrusted them to a school that expects from its students such a fear of Hashem — the one that their father received at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. Conversely, since they attend the school you mention in your letter, within which the fear of Hashem expected is, it seems, considerably inferior to that of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* or its equivalent, how can one be surprised that they experience a fall and that one is confronted with situations like those you describe in your letter? Naturally, my purpose is not to moralize. I am concerned here with your other children, over whom you still exercise authority. It is clear that these must study and receive their education within the four cubits of a school that demands of its students an upright fear of Hashem. In this way, you will be able to ask them to observe the entirety of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*. Thus, one can hope that they will accept it, since their parents will have given them every possibility, since they will never have found themselves in an environment of compromise.

In recent years, in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, many parents have modified their conceptions and have also adopted this position, which means that they send their children to a Yeshivah* where one devotes oneself exclusively to sacred studies, to a Beis Yaakov* or to a Beis Rivkah*. Moreover, from time to time this trend develops. Now, if this is true for everyone, how much more is it the case for those, like yourself and your husband, who observe the consequences of the education received in communal schools, or even in those somewhat superior to them. It is quite clear that everything just said is addressed also to your husband. Likewise, I hope you will not hold it against me for repeating all this to you once more. The reason (note 4: For this repetition) is the following: I feel it is my duty not to remain silent, since you wrote to me in order to describe the situation. With my blessing to give good tidings,

M. Schneerson,

I have just received the letter from your husband and the response to what he tells me is also found in what is set forth above.
