I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, which reached me with delay, in which you describe the situation (note 1: A nervous depression of the father, endangering the children) of this family and, in particular, its state of health. You ask me what I think of it. You report the doctor's words according to which there is no reason to expect a complete recovery. This seems surprising, for it is clearly known that in several cases, such a recovery was indeed obtained, including for people I have seen myself and who have been well for more than ten years already — moreover, who have married since then and who earn their livelihood in an orderly manner. I am thinking, in particular, of a man I have known for a long time, who was single, who married, and who now has children. Regarding a specific case (note 2: The particular case of this patient), one cannot know in a clear and decisive manner, but in any event, such a formulation from a doctor is very surprising. At most, a man can say that he guarantees nothing, that he takes no responsibility for the future. He cannot, however, commit himself beyond that.

In this case, you describe their situation and it also involves children of school age. One must therefore do everything to preserve their home (note 3: And not let it be broken up due to the father's illness). Another point, which is essential — one must be in permanent contact with specialists in this field, questioning them from time to time about the various treatments and medications that are often discovered, in order to determine whether they apply to this case.

Hashem accords His Providence* to each person. He "heals all flesh and performs wonders." He will therefore guide each of those you mention in your letter toward what will be truly good for them, with a visible and tangible good — "good for the heavens and good for the creatures." May Hashem grant that a positive and fundamental change be observed immediately. Indeed, we are in Adar*, in favorable days for the children of Israel, in everything that concerns them.

Without doubt, you are not content with the studies you mention to me. You intensify them from time to time and you surely also participate in public classes. You also request a permission. It is clear that in this domain, you must address yourself to a competent Rav who is on the ground and knows the details of this situation. With my blessing to give good tidings,

במענה למכתבו שהגיע באיחור זמן, בו כותב אודות המצב במשפחה ביחוד בעניני בריאות וכו' ושואל דעתי בזה.

והנה בכלל תמוה מה שכותב שכאילו אמר רופא שאין סיכוים להחלמה שלימה, בה בשעה שכמה מקרים ידועים ברור שנתרפאו בהחלט. ומביניהם גם כאלו שאני ראיתים, וזה יותר מכעשר שנה שהם בסדר ולא עוד אלא שבינתים נשאו (כי המדובר זה שמכירו הנני משך כל הזמן, הי' רווק ונשא והוליד בנים) ומשתכר בפרנסה קבועה.

בהנוגע למאורע מיוחד אי אפשר לדעת ברור ובהחלט אבל פשוט, שאמירת רופא בסגנון האמור, תמוה ביותר, ולכל היותר ובכלל בן אדם יכול לאמר, שאינו ערב ואינו לוקח אחריות בהנוגע לעתיד, ותו לא מידי.

בכלל בהענין כפי שמתארו וביחוד שילדים העומדים בגיל חינוך באמצע, פשוט שצריך להשתדל לחפש כל טצדקי שהבית ימשיך בקיומו.

ועוד ועיקר שצריך לעמוד בקישור תמידי עם מומחים במקצוע זה, לעוררם לשאלם בפועל מזמן לזמן על אופני טפולים ותרופות המתחדשים לעתים תכופות, האם יש בהם מתאימים גם בנדון זה.

והשי"ת המשגיח על כאו"א בהשגחה פרטית והוא גם הרופא כל בשר ומפליא לעשות, ינחהו ואת כאו"א מהמוזכרים במכתבו בטוב לפניהם באמת טוב הנראה והנגלה שהוא טוב לשמים וטוב לבריות.

ויהי רצון שיחול שינוי לטוב עיקרי בזה תיכף, והרי נמצאים אנו בחדש אדר ימים מוצלחים לבני ישראל בכל עניניהם.

בודאי אינו מסתפק בהשיעורים שכותב ומוסיף עליהם מזמן לזמן, ובודאי גם משתתף בשיעורים הנלמדים ברבים.

לשאלתו ע"ד היתר כו' - מובן שבזה צריך לפנות לרב מומחה על אתר ושיודע כל הפרטים וכו'.
