Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7603 — Tzedakah
Volume 20 · Letter 158
By the grace of Hashem,
18 Adar* 5721,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of 10 Adar*. At a propitious moment, all those you cite will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. Just as you transmitted this request to me, may Hashem grant that you give me good tidings thereof. You mention the wearing of a beard and you tell me that some advise "trimming" it.
What you mean by the term "trimming" is not clear. In my view, based on what you write, there is no reason to cut it (note 1: See, on this subject, letter no. 7111), not even to trim it. Indeed, when one has adopted a positive practice on several occasions, over a period of time, one must ask oneself how one could cease doing so. How much more is this the case here, since the Tzemach Tzedek* rules that this is not merely a positive practice but indeed an obligation. And it is incomprehensible that someone who has put into practice the opinion of the Rebbe* in this matter would suddenly change his attitude. This will cause the greatest surprise. But perhaps it is merely a matter of trimming the beard with a comb. Some, belonging to an elite, also avoid doing this and, in the expression used regarding this, "they do not touch the hairs of their beard." Nevertheless, you may permit yourself to do so, since, as I have said, this concerns only an elite. In this way, you will also fulfill the Mitzvah* of honoring your mother (note 2: Who requests this "trimming").
You fear that the beard will prevent you from finding a good match. I am surprised that you could envisage this. Indeed, our Sages* affirm, without anyone contesting it, that the thirteen points of the beard are the channels conveying influence and enabling one to obtain the blessing of Hashem (note 3: See, on this subject, letters no. 3323 and 4274). It can therefore only result in increased help for everything positive, particularly for finding a match that is truly good. May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of all this. You will also tell me that you have reassured your mother, to whom Hashem will grant long days and good years, in a pleasant manner and with the fitting words, based on what has just been said. In accordance with your request, the present letter is addressed to you bypassing the queue. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,
For the Rebbe* Shlita*,
The secretary,
