Igrot Kodesh · Letter 760 — Teshuvah

Volume 3 · Letter 366 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,
25 Elul 5710,

To the great Rabbi, Chassid who fears Hashem,
scholar of Torah, comparable to Sinai,
who uproots mountains by his study,
puts it in order and analyzes it, well known for
his kindness, who seeks the good of his
people, speaks words of peace,
Rabbi Y. Halevi [1], Chief Rabbi [2],

I greet and bless you,

On the occasion of the new year, which will be good for us and for all Israel, I would like to wish you and all yours a year of good life, of peace, a great blessing, material and spiritual, a year fruitful and fertile in your work for the community and for each individual who constitutes it. May Hashem allow you to accomplish His Will.

With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually, a year of redemption through our righteous Mashiach*, very soon and in our days, Amen.

M. Schneerson,

You will find enclosed the fascicle published on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah*, drawn from the teaching of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which has just appeared and which will surely interest you.

A point briefly, on this day. It was on 25 Elul that the world was created and that it was said "and there was evening, and there was morning, one day" [3]. Time can be defined in two ways. One can consider it as a continuous process or as a succession of independent moments. It is thus that one can make the distinction between the talmudic passage and the opinion of Rabba, expressed in tractate Nazir 7a.

On the other hand, according to all opinions, one can identify day and night, between which there is no interruption. Both are manifestations of time, but not distinct periods. By contrast, one can define a day as a specific period of time, distinct from another day. Thus, the Zohar, vol. 3, p. 94b, says clearly that "each day has its specific contribution."

And there are only seven days, each different from all the others. Then the cycle begins again, and it is, anew, the first day.

Day and night have an effect on the service of Hashem. It is said that "none shall be cast away" [4] and that intentional transgressions will be transformed into merits [5], for "He will remove the spirit of impurity from the earth" [6]. Then "the night will shine as the day." But each day introduces a separation, and even in the world to come "each Tzaddik will be dazzled by the canopy raised for another Tzaddik." All this will not be developed here.
