Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7596 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 20 · Letter 151 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
11 Adar* 5721,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of multiple accomplishments for the Torah* and its Mitzvos*, of broad knowledge, filled with eagerness, the Rav Chananya Yom Tov Lipa (note 1: Rav H. Y. T. L. Deutsch, Rabbi of Helmets. See, regarding him, letter no. 7518),
I greet you and bless you,
I was happy to meet you, in addition to receiving your letter of this Sunday, with what was enclosed therein. Blessed be He Who heals the sick, He Who heals all flesh and performs wonders. May Hashem grant that you have a complete and swift recovery, until you regain your strength in the most literal sense and your power, as this expression indicates, as explained by the Chassidic* discourse entitled Maskil of Eisan HaEzrachi (note 2: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Printed in the Kuntres Limud HaChassidus of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*"), by the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*. Moreover, the merit of what is public comes to your aid — your actions for Judaism and, above all, for the Mikveh*, in addition to your books, to the waters of knowledge, since "there is no water but Torah*," whose purity is immutable. Indeed, its words, even on the lips of men, cannot contract impurity (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "In this sense, it is precisely compared to fire, according to tractate Berachos* 22a, in which one immerses essentially to purify others, as indicated by tractate Sanhedrin 39a. You must understand what I mean"). How much more is this the case for the words emanating (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Zohar*, volume 3, page 124b, explained in Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 26") from the Tree of Life, in which there are no controversies linked to the spirit of impurity — that is, the profound dimension of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*.
We have been enjoined to rejoice on every day of this month. May Hashem therefore grant that it be so in everything that concerns each person, both communally and personally, morally and physically. And one knows the superiority (note 5: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Levush, cited by the Turei Zahav on the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 670, paragraph 3") of the holiday celebrated this month, Purim*, over Chanukah*. Indeed, it is also the physical body that was saved on Purim*.
I will conclude by evoking what is current (note 6: See letter no. 7585) on this 11th of the month, based on the beginning and end of our tractate, that of Megillah*: "The Megillah* is read from the 11th of Adar* until the 15th." It is known that this number alludes (note 7: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Shnei Luchos HaBris*, at Parshas* Tetzaveh*") to the Divine Name Havayah*. Indeed, the last two letters of this Name are Vav and Hei, which have the numerical value of eleven. And the beginning of this Name, Yud and Hei, has the numerical value of fifteen — the last date on which the Megillah* is read. The sum of all the dates of reading of the Megillah*, from 11 to 15, is sixty-five, the numerical value of the Divine Name Ado-nai, which is a way of reading the Name Havayah* when it is concealed (note 8: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Pesachim* 50a") — that is, when the Divinity is hidden by the world. All of this is clearly connected to the Megillah*, in which the Name of Hashem does not appear. It appears only in allusion, through initials or through the final letters of words. This is the reason the Megillah* must be read and the miracle disseminated (note 9: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Consult the Tzafnas Paneach* of the Rogatchover Gaon*, on the Rambam*, Laws of the Megillah*, chapter 1, paragraph 3"). The same applies, more generally, to the study of Torah*, which brings elevation to the world, which defines what is permitted, pure, Kosher*, in order to fulfill the Will of Hashem and His Mitzvah*, which indicates what cannot be consecrated to His service.
Through this action of the soul in the world, one can bring to light the true content and purpose of all the days of the year (note 10: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "The soul, the world, and the year are the three dimensions defined by the Sefer Yetzirah* itself, and consult the conclusion of the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'And Mount Sinai was smoke,' of 5628"). Indeed, it is necessary that "each day have its specific content" (note 11: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "As specified by the Zohar*, volume 3, page 94b, and see volume 1, page 264b"). For this, the study of Torah* is indispensable. Indeed, "Moshe* established for the people of Israel that one study and teach what pertains to each day" (note 12: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "That is, according to the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 429, paragraph 4, 'the miracle that occurred on that day, the laws that are necessary for that day'"). Thus, in the words of Rashi* at the conclusion of this tractate: "They will accept it and put it into practice — they themselves and their children — in this world and in the World to Come." With my respects and my blessing,
