Volume 20 · Letter 147

By the grace of Hashem,

8 Adar* 5721,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter of 3 Adar*, the month during which one increases one's joy, as well as those that preceded it. You make reference to what concerns the Yeshivah*. Just as you were able to observe the wonders of Hashem in the past, when our masters and leaders invoked His mercy, I am profoundly convinced that it will be the same in the future. Moreover, it is known that the beginning is always difficult, as has been said, and how much more so will it therefore be thus (note 1: One will be able to observe these wonders), given the elevation in holiness from one year to the next.

May (note 2: From this paragraph, the same letter was addressed to several people) Hashem grant that each person act in this direction, with true joy. In the words of the Alter Rebbe*, in his Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 529, paragraph 12, the joy that the Torah* commands "is not the attraction of wine, thinking that the more one takes, the more one fulfills the Mitzvah* of joy. For the Injunction we have received concerns the joy of the service of the Creator of all things." You will consult this text. Admittedly, the joy of Purim* is different, manifesting "until one no longer knows" (note 3: "The difference between 'cursed be Haman' and 'blessed be Mordechai'"). This is not the case, on the other hand, for the joy of the festival, to which this reference from the Shulchan Aruch* alludes. Their common point, however, is the following: this joy (note 4: That of Purim*) must also enable the service of the Creator, even though it is not limited, as Chassidus* explains in the discourses of Purim*.

I hope that you will use your capacity, to the fullest extent possible, to be drawn to the "wine of the Torah*." Various texts of Chassidus* explain that this expression alludes to the secrets of the Torah*, to its profound dimension, which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*. As has been said, it will be disseminated without limit. May Hashem grant that you apply yourself to this with joy and enthusiasm. With my blessing to give good tidings and for a joyous Purim*,
