Igrot Kodesh · Letter 759 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 3 · Letter 365

By the grace of Hashem,
25 Elul 5710,

May the mountains bring peace and blessing
to the great Rabbi, Chassid who fears Hashem, who renders
judgment, zealous man of many accomplishments,
leading his community in uprightness,
who shines and illuminates, is whole, descends
from an illustrious lineage, Rabbi Meir Abuchatzira shlita [1],
spiritual guide of the community of Midelt,

After inquiring after your good news, I would like to tell you with what pleasure I read your letter of the 14th of the month of mercy [2]. I have good hope that you yourself, and all those who follow you, are ready to take part in the work of extending the educational project for the children of your country, in order to magnify and exalt the Torah. Hashem will grant us success, and we will see the fruits of our effort, that of Torah, which transcends the sun, according to the expression of the Zohar, vol. 1, p. 223b.

Here is a point that is timely. On this day, 25 Elul, the world was created. Commenting on the verse "In the beginning, Hashem created the heavens and the earth," our Sages say that what they contain was also. More profoundly, this means that the six millennia of the creation, with all the events that constitute them, were already present on the first day of the creation, and the latter could even have been realized by a single Word, which would have included within itself all of the ten Words at once.

It is therefore quite obvious that the finality and the perfection of the creation, as it will be after the exile, had to exist already from its first day. This was indeed the case.

The creation, as the books of Kabbalah establish, began with the Tzimtzum* [3], which made room for the worlds. Then, a thread of Light illuminated these worlds. First, Hashem built worlds and destroyed them. This was the system of Tohu*. Then He constructed one and observed that it suited Him. This was the system of Tikkun*.

Our Sages teach, in tractate Shabbos 77b, that there was "first the darkness, then the light," as it is said "and there was evening, and there was morning."

The perfection and fullness of the world are obtained when it is not, for man, the "bread of shame" [4]. The creature must therefore introduce his own effort by struggling against the evil inclination, until his service of Hashem illuminates the darkness of the world and the dimness becomes light.

It is to this that the first day of the creation alludes — "and there was evening," two millennia of Tohu*, the world evolving in darkness; then "and there was morning," two millennia of Torah, introducing clarity; finally, "one day," two millennia of the messianic period, when the hard effort of the period of exile must be realized, whose purpose is to unite the "evening" and the "morning" in order to make of them "one day." Then "the night will shine as the day," of the light of the One Hashem, whose Name is one.

Such is, in general, the mission entrusted to every Jew and to every Jewess. All must illuminate the darkness of the world, by "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah (which) is light," until the revelation of Mashiach*, when the terms of the promise that "Hashem will be your eternal Light" will be accomplished.

In accordance with your request, I will mention your name, as well as that of the members of your family and the persons you cite in your letter, at the gravesite of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, so that you may be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

Wishing you and myself a good year, greeting your father, the great Rabbi shlita [5], chief of Israel, on his royal throne, and awaiting good news,

Menachem Schneerson,

I enclose with the present the fascicle published on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah*, with the copy of a letter addressed to all in connection with this fascicle, and another [6] intended for all our brothers, the children of Israel, to whom Hashem will grant long life.
