Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7587 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 20 · Letter 142 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Adar* 5721,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, carries out a sacred mission (note 1: Teaching based on sacred values), filled with eagerness, the Rav Shmuel (note 2: Rav S. Hefer. See, regarding him, letters no. 7261, 7609, 7632, and 7676),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 29 Shevat*. At a propitious moment, your name will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. I thank you very much for having described to me, at least briefly, the consequences of your visits (note 3: To the settlements of Eretz Yisrael*, in order to disseminate Torah* and Mitzvos* there). It is clear that there is absolutely no reason to engage in polemics (note 4: See, on this subject, letter no. 7632). First of all, it is a pity to waste time, for the time devoted to these visits is necessarily limited. It must therefore be used for what needs to be said and communicated (note 5: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "I am alluding to the necessity of putting the Mitzvos* into practice in an effective and concrete manner"). Furthermore, one can verify in practice that in general, it is practically inevitable, when such a discussion begins, that one wishes to emerge victorious, even if it means departing from self-awareness and even, unfortunately, from awareness of Hashem. The objective of your visit is therefore not this polemics. On the contrary, one must present and clearly explain your conceptions, in a pleasant manner and, naturally, peacefully. Admittedly, such an approach raises a difficulty. One must ensure that those who listen to you do not get the impression that you refuse the discussion due to the weakness of your positions and conceptions, not knowing what to answer. However, you have acquired experience through your visits to various places. You will therefore surely find a formulation that will avert this risk. And even if polemics is necessary, it is proper and possible to reduce it to a minimum.

We are in the month of Adar*, regarding which it is said (note 6: In the Megillah*, regarding the victory of Purim*): "The nations of the world became Jewish." How much more must the ignorance of Jews disappear! May Hashem therefore grant that all barriers be removed. In this way, "the truth will sprout from the earth," it will develop and grow. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this, in joy and in enthusiasm, since we have been enjoined to increase our joy and a Precept of the Torah* is also a force infused to put it into practice,
