Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7585 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 20 · Letter 140
By the grace of Hashem,
Rosh Chodesh* Adar* 5721,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the attention of the participants in the Talmud class with its commentaries, taught in the synagogue Adas Yaakov, of Brooklyn, may Hashem grant you long life,
I greet you and bless you,
I learned with pleasure, through the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of multiple accomplishments and filled with eagerness, the Rav Pinchas HaKohen (note 1: Rav P. Katz. See, regarding him, letter no. 4684), that you are concluding, these days, your public study of tractate Megillah*. In conformity with the Jewish custom, which is an integral part of the Torah*, you will no doubt immediately begin the study of another tractate. To use the formula that was elaborated by the early Sages*: "May it be Your Will, Hashem our Elokim*, just as You have helped us to conclude... to help us to begin..." One can add to this the specification provided by Chassidus* (note 2: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Tanya*, at the end of chapter 27, and the Torah* Or at page 86c"), according to which an Injunction of the Torah* is also an assurance given for the future (note 3: The imperative has the same grammatical form as the future). Such is the meaning of the phrase: "Each person shall read it (note 4: The Megillah*. The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "End of tractate Megillah*") in its time," which is both an injunction and a certainty, since "no one shall be cast away." It is therefore the same here. When a request is formulated "before You," it also becomes a promise "before You," so that "just as You have helped us," it is absolutely certain that "You will help us."
And, as the end, the conclusion of this paragraph says, "May it be Your Will" — there will also be fulfilled the promise according to which: "Hashem will bless His people with peace," for this is indeed the vessel containing the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, in everything that a man and his family need.
May Hashem grant that the beginning and end of the tractate whose study you are concluding be fulfilled: "The Megillah* is read from the 11th of Adar* until the 15th." It is known that this number alludes (note 5: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Shnei Luchos HaBris*, at Parshas* Tetzaveh*. See the end of the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'The Megillah* is read,' delivered in 5629") to the Divine Name Havayah*. Indeed, the last two letters of this Name are Vav and Hei, which have the numerical value of eleven. And the beginning of this Name, Yud and Hei, has the numerical value of fifteen — the last date on which the Megillah* is read. The sum of all the dates of reading of the Megillah*, from 11 to 15, is sixty-five, the numerical value of the Divine Name Ado-nai, which is a way of reading the Name Havayah* when it is concealed (note 6: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "As explained by tractate Pesachim* 50a") — that is, when the Divinity is hidden by the world. All of this is clearly connected to the Megillah*, in which the Name of Hashem does not appear. It appears only in allusion, through initials or through the final letters of words. This is the reason the Megillah* must be read and the miracle disseminated (note 7: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "As explained by the Tzafnas Paneach*, of the Rogatchover Gaon*, on the Rambam*, Laws of the Megillah*, chapter 1, paragraph 3"). The same applies, more generally, to the study of Torah*, which brings elevation to the world, which defines what is permitted, pure, Kosher*, in order to fulfill the Will of Hashem and His Mitzvah*, which indicates what cannot be consecrated to His service.
Through this action of the soul in the world, one can bring to light the true content and purpose of all the days of the year. Indeed, it is necessary that "each day have its specific content" (note 8: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "As specified by the Zohar*, volume 3, page 94b, and see volume 1, page 264b"). For this, the study of Torah* is indispensable. Indeed, "Moshe* established for the people of Israel that one study and teach what pertains to each day" (note 9: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "That is, according to the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 429, paragraph 4, 'the miracle that occurred on that day, the laws that are necessary for that day'"). Thus, in the words of Rashi* at the same reference: "They will accept it and put it into practice — they themselves and their children — in this world and in the World to Come." With my respects and my blessing to give good tidings,
