The (note 1: This letter is addressed to Rav Ephraim Eliezer Yalles, of Philadelphia. It was written on his own letter, dated 12 Shevat* 5721. See, regarding him, letter no. 7455) Torah* Or, Parshas* Beshalach*, at page 61d, says: "Our Sages* teach: He who desires to submit himself to the yoke of the Heavenly Kingdom shall attend to his needs, wash his hands, put on Tzitzis* and Tefillin*." The source of this citation (note 2: Rav Yalles wondered about this reference, since this statement is formulated by tractate Berachos* 14b without mentioning the Tzitzis*) is the Pri Eitz Chaim* and the beginning of the Siddur* of the Arizal*. Perhaps it is based on the Zohar*, volume 3, page 120b. In fact, the Alter Rebbe*, in the first edition of his Shulchan Aruch*, chapter 2, paragraph 8, indeed cites the Talmud, tractate Berachos* 15a, which makes the same affirmation, but without mentioning the Tzitzis*. Nevertheless, it is conceivable that there is a connection between the two formulations, based on the practice of wearing Tzitzis* during the night and sleeping with a Tallis Katan* (note 3: The revealed part of the Torah* does not require one to wear Tzitzis* during the night, whereas its profound teaching does require it). You will see, on this subject, the Halachic* ruling of the Tzemach Tzedek* on the Orach Chaim*, chapter 8, as well as the Beis Chadash* and the Perishah*, Orach Chaim*, at the end of chapter 2.
