By the grace of Hashem,
24 Elul 5710,

To the great Rabbi, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem,
great scholar, of distinguished lineage, man of
many accomplishments and good deeds, rendering
judgment and leading his community in a peaceful manner,
Rabbi Refael Baruch [1], spiritual guide
of the holy community of Meknès, whose influence
extends over the whole country,

I greet you and bless you greatly,

I duly received, in its time, your letter of the 9th of the month of mercy [2], in which you announce to me, thank Hashem, that you have recovered your health. May Hashem grant that you always be in full strength. The Rambam teaches indeed, in his Hilchos Deos, at the beginning of chapter 4, that being in good health is an integral part of the service of Hashem. You will therefore fully assume your rabbinical functions and will be able to lead your community on the path of Torah, the service of Hashem, and good deeds, until the coming of Mashiach*, very soon and in our days.

I pray to Hashem that we may — that is, you yourself, and we from here [3] — disseminate Torah with fear of Hashem in your city. Our Sages explain that one comes to the help of him who desires to purify himself. When one sanctifies oneself somewhat down here, one receives a great sanctity from above.

I am certain that the light of the Torah and its luminary will shine more and more, until we all witness the realization of the promise that "the night will shine as the day."

I enclose with the present the fascicle published for the 18th of Elul, which will surely interest you.

I conclude by wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, together with all the members of your family. May the coming year be, for all Israel, that of the true and complete redemption, through our righteous Mashiach*.

To obtain this, one must awaken Teshuvah* and give Tzedakah*, both material and spiritual, as the letter disseminated for Rosh Hashanah* explains, of which I enclose a copy for you [4].

Immediate Teshuvah*, immediate redemption, and may there be immediately granted to us a good and long life, as well as peace.

מכתבו מט' לחדש הרחמים בעתו נתקבל ותודה ל[א]ל על שמודיע בשורה טובה שחזר לבריאותו. כן יתן ה' וכן יוסיף אשר יהי' בריא ושלם, וכמו שכתב הרמב"ם הל' דעות ריש פרק ד', אשר בריאות הגוף מדרכי השם הוא, וישב נכון על כסא רבנותו ויוכל לנהל עדתו על התורה ועל העבודה ועל גמילות חסדים, עד ביאת ינון, במהרה בימינו ממש.

תקותי להשם יתברך אשר יעלה בידינו, פירוש ביד כת"ר ובידינו אנו מכאן, לעסוק בהפצת התורה ביראת שמים במחנו הטהור, ועל יסוד מרז"ל הבא לטהר מסייעין לו, וכשמקדשין מעט מלמטה מקדשין הרבה מלמעלה. בטחוני שאור התורה והמאור שבתורה ילך הלוך ואור, עד שנזכה כולנו לקיום היעוד ולילה כיום יאיר.

ואסיים באיחולים וברכות כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה לכת"ר ולכל ב"ב שיחיו ותהי' השנה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל שנת גאולה, גאולה האמתית ושלימה, על ידי משיח צדקנו, אשר הקדמה לזה הוא התעוררות תשובה וענין הצדקה, צדקה גשמית וצדקה רוחנית, וכמבואר במכתב לראש השנה הבע"ל אשר העתקתו מוסג"פ,
